I have a 2TB Western Digital Passport Ultra that is not being recognized by my PC. I have tried another computer and switching USB cables/ports.. I have also tried going into My Computer>Manage>Storage>Disc Management it does not show up, even after waiting 10 minutes. It spins when plugged in, sounds healthy even. The light comes on but is a constant... not blinking. It has never been dropped, I am thinking it my have been corrupted by my WD media player. I would like to recover data at the very least. Any hints and or thoughts greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It is an external. The symptoms could be explained by either the drive or the enclosure.
And since the controller card in the enclosure (SATA to USB converter) are very fragile and often die. it is worth testing that first and trying your own hand and some recovery first. Since the HD case is forfeit either way, might as well crack it open and give it a try.

Many thanks! I might have to try that..

Hi there DJSCOTFREE,

That is really unpleasant. :(

Unfortunately, as the drive is not recognized by Disk Management, you will most probably not be able to access it with any software tools. I believe it is not recognized as having its full capacity by BIOS as well right?
I believe you can:
- Contact a data recovery company in case the data stored on the drive is really important. You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=c8XuEJ
- RMA the drive in case it is under warranty. You can just contact the place you got it from or WD's Support: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=HwMVK8

Taking the drive out of the enclosure is not a good idea at all. The device is hardware encrypted. This means that you will not be able to access the data in case the drive is outside the enclosure. Also, most likely the drive inside has a proprietary connector and you will not be able to attach it via SATA.
This would void the warranty if under any as well.

Let me know you have some more questions,
D_Know_WD :)

Thanks friends! Big shout out to bjornl, corroded, and D_Know_WD! I appreciate the quick response. The funny thing is that I can't remember all that I have on the drive, I think it was just ripped movies and TV shows.. I do believe it is still covered by warranty though.. Would I be able to have someone confirm contents and decide to clone or just buy new?
