So I've recently bought a new pair of headphones and think that they are pretty good. They are the Sennheiser HD 439. From what I heard they are very balanced, (Reviews on Amazon) but from what I've been told (Friends and Family) it's bass that makes headphones good, like beats or bose. So how do mine compare to them? Also, my headphones are 5.1 but are they true 5.1 or virtual? I know that I have a lot of questions but I was just wondering.

A headphones quality is not determined by bass, its generally determined by build, comfort, and audio quality. Bass is a personal preference and is common nowadays with all the popular pop, hip hop, and rap songs out there. If someone says bass is what makes headphones good they haven't tried anything but Beats. As Gam3r01 said a balanced sound is good for all-round use and can also be tuned for more bass, treble, or whatever you like with a software equalizer.

About the 5.1 I think you're mistaken, the HD 439's are stereo. Anyways continuing the topic pretty much any headphone or headset that declares its 5.1 or 7.1 is virtual with a few exceptions. Virtual surround is pretty much stereo tuned to sound "3D" and is sorta based on the...

Its personal preference its up to you whether you like bass or lower sound or even balanced. Also, it depends on what you use these headphones for are they for daily use, gaming, video editing? Please inform.

If anyone says bass is what makes headphones "quality" you can stop listening right there.
Bass has nothing to do with quality, at all.
Quality (in my opinion) is based on functionality, build, clarity, comfort, and tuning.
Bass is personal preference, a quality headset will have the ability to handle high bass without distortion, but they should also have a solid mix of highs and mids as well. Yours are relatively even, which is great for widespread use.
(Also, Beats are trash for the most part)

Virtual surround is pretty much stereo tuned to sound "3D" and is sorta based on the placebo effect (search it up if you don't know what it is). There are a few headsets that have true 5.1/7.1 but the audio quality of them is poor, with all the small drivers jam packed into a earcup.

Beats is just overpriced $30 headphones, which are induced by celebrities, sports stars, and Apple - that's why they are hated by audiophiles.

^This.
The Cloud IIs are probably the best headset in their price range. They are extremely comfortable and light, yet maintain a great sound quality. The 7.1 is virtual, but considering nearly all surround sound its, its great. The mic could be better, but its not lacking in my opinion.
