EDIT: 2nd reply is current build and will do it unless there are obvious mistakes. Just need someone to look over it quickly.

------------------------------------------------

Current full build ideas at the bottom, all can be subject to change.

Following the asking for advice guide:
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Software Development/Programming, Running multiple VMs, ideally able to run 3 monitors, light modelling/rendering, gaming capable but not important
Parts Preferences: Aiming for Intel/Nvidia for ease/reliability but willing to switch for a sizable price difference
Overclocking: Yes but not initially
Additional Comments: I am trying to make a personal workstation. Not trying to make a gaming machine but it will be used for some game development. Goal is to maximize bang for buck and just have fun building it. No experience building so the part choice is likely abysmal.

Hi there.

For the most part... I'd say your build specs are pretty good. There may be some tweaks that I might suggest.

For one, Arctic Silver is a very reliable thermal compound you can use, and it costs maybe a dollar more than your current selection.

Your CPU Cooler, SSD, and Motherboard are not too familiar to me, and I'd suggest doing some research to make doubly certain they are reliable. Additionally, while Hitachi drives are 1st in the world as far as reliability, the Deskstar is a NAS drive I believe. I'm not terribly knowledgeable about NAS drive use, but it's something I thought I'd point out in case you don't either.

The "Gold" rating on your Power Supply is excellent, and Ripjaws are very popular RAM cards because of...

Trying to narrow down what I need. This drops the price a couple hundred but will it perform adequately? Will it be able to support 3 monitors? Is there anything I should cut price on or anything that would be better to spend a little extra on?

Last stab at it, need to decide today for the deal on the 960. At this point just looking for any glaring mistakes.

The "Gold" rating on your Power Supply is excellent, and Ripjaws are very popular RAM cards because of their performance/reliability/cost.

That said, your CPU and GPU choices are sufficient for most gaming tasks, and video/game object rendering shouldn't be too terrible. I have a pretty ridiculous setup and a two hour video will take my build, about and hour to render at 1080p res. So... regardless you'll have to have some patients.

Lastly, a side note that might help you with some headaches in the future. When you install your O.S. (particularly if it's Windows), do so with only your O.S. drive (the one you want the O.S. on) plugged in. If you have the second drive plugged in while installing Windows it will likely install a part of itself onto that drive. Making it so you can't run your computer without both drives installed. This happened to me and I wasn't pleased with having to reset my system :(.

Well, I hope my suggestions help you out, and best of luck on that build ^.^
