MSI R9 270X Gaming 4GB causing black/disconnected screens, etc.

Thank you very much in advance to anyone willing to contribute to this.

I never had any problems running games up until now, and that includes Civilization 5, Europa Universalis 4, etc.
However, I just got myself some PS Dual Shock 4 controllers so I can play some games with my girlfried, and I've tried Trine 2 Demo yesterday to test it out (first time controller user, first time user of these co-op controller friendly games) and
1) when I ran the game for the first time, I ran it on 60Hz, 1920x1080 resolution, Very high detail, vertical sync on, 3D modelling the AMD HD option, etc. Started the game just fine but as soon as I selected the "play demo" option and it started running, my TV turned black, it actually showed as if there is no connection to the computer, and the graphics card started fighting for it's life. I was sincerely surprised since this was supposed to be one of the better cards, especially for a game with such low requirements.
2) I read a few reviews yesterday on tom's hardware and the consensus was that it's either the too high resolution, too high refresh rate or just too high detail. After several tries and reboots I went for the 4:3 ratio and second lowest resolution 1024*768, medium level of detail, turned the vertical sync off and set the refresh rate to automatic (my TV suggested to me that it's on 30Hz but I can't be sure). Long story short, I started the demo just fine, it worked fine for 30 minutes or so of gameplay and then ... black screen, disconnected screen even, and the graphics card fighting for it's life again.

Not entirely sure what is happening, I've checked recommended requirements and my system surpasses it by a long shot. I've also tried downloading the latest drivers for GPU and checked in BIOS that it's not the integrated graphics that's being used. I've considered that it is overheating but it shouldn't really if I think about it sensibly, however I'm unsure how to check that (when the screen is black and not responding).

My hardware is:
ASRock B85 motherboard
Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz, 3MB CPU
Kingston 8GB 1,600MHz DDR3 RAM
MSI R9 270X Gaming 4GB GPU
Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD
some random legacy hard drive, took it from my old laptop or something like that
Corsair CXM 500W modular 80 plus

Sadly my GPU is not under guarantee anymore, so I'd need to figure out a solution (or obviously avoid playing Trine 2). It's not that I'm keen on this particular game, I just want to avoid it happening again. I'll try some other game tonight and see if it's potentially game dependent, but I really don't see how this graphics card is dying on me when it was supposed to last me a few years :(
Thank you in advance for all your help.

When I finished writing this I've seen the suggestion that VRAM might be at fault - I'll try completely removing GPU drivers tonight using AMD uninstall and then install Omega drivers. I really hope this resolves it as my GPU is not under warranty anymore.

UPDATE:
Hmm, i have installed the Crimson driver, so the Omega driver as they are now called under AMD's umbrella, and all other games seem to work fine - went through the demo of Shiftlings and Castle Crashers. Also managed to get through the demo of Trine 2 but gave up on medium graphics setting and went with low. In other words, far from sure if this are the best possible settings for the R9 270X 4GB, but at least it's working now.
I've also tried running Rocket League late yesterday, but the black screen/disconnected screen appears straight off - I have to check the settings today.

Anybody else has any ideas? Even if it is just to reaffirm that these are the best settings possible?
Thank you in advance.

I've had a similar problem, but with my HD 7870 Tahiti LE, which was reaching 95 degrees (i know lol) and then shutting off, which I didn't know the cause was temperature.

I'm pretty sure that my card has been burnt out now because whenever i play something that makes my GPU run under it's full power, it reaches 80 degrees or so and black screens with no signal and I have to power off with the button and my PC loads back up just as normal.

Have you since fixed this problem?

Thanks for the answer, but I'm not sure if it that is the case here, since the disconnected screen appeared right after a fresh start of the computer (sometimes in the middle of the game starting up). I'd reckon it'd take at least a few minutes for the temperature to reach critical levels or I'd hope TwinFrozr would at least become audible (I know it works because I was able to turn it off and with the AMD Gaming app).
The problem I had was becoming worse and worse - now all of a sudden EU4 wasn't working anymore, couldn't even load up Trine 1, etc. Something is definitely wrong with my card and if it burnt out as you suggest, I really hope I didn't miss some signs along the way because that would've been fairly easy to resolve.

My solution was to make sure RMA is possible (which appears it is, since we now have 3 years of warranty in the UK - hooray for me, I was sure it was only 1 year), and I'm sending it back to Netherlands.

I'm fairly confident that something is wrong with it (whether it's VRAM or something else I don't really know), because I've tried the integrated Intel HD 4400 graphics instead and some of the above games worked for more than 1.5hrs without a problem; same games that caused the screen to disconnect right after/or in the middle of the game starting up with MSI R9 270X.

Hopefully they'll tell me what the problem was and I can share it with the community.

I have received the new/refurbished graphics card from MSI but unfortunately there was no explanation given as to what went wrong. Sorry for that, I just hope it doesn't happen again. But I am reminding myself to keep checking the temperature of the GPU now :)

If you can believe it, the refurbished card worked fine, but after a few minutes of Rocket League, the TV screen disconnected and I couldn't get back into Windows as the "new/refurbished" graphics card disconnected the TV halfway in loading of Windows.

Any ideas?

Is the CPU fan working, it won't take long for that to overheat with no fan, also check the cooler is firmly attached, it's no unknown for those pushpin coolers to work loose over time.
Sudden cutouts like this can also be a sign of a failing power supply or even motherboard.
Try: Remove the current card and use the motherboard video, if that works fine you'll next need to either try your card in another system or get it checked by a repair shop.
Or, you could find another power supply and try the system with that, (make sure it has the required PCI-E leads for the R9 270X, though).

The CPU fan seems to be working just fine, especially since the first time the TV screen disconnected, I've had the computer on for half a day beforehand (the CPU would surely overheat).
I have removed the card and am currently using the integrated graphics which works fine.

Since it will be very hard for me to try the graphics card in another computer and/or get my hands on a different PSU (without buying a new one), I will have to make a stab in the dark. I do appreciate it is fairly unlikely that it's the graphics card fault - therefore it is more likely that my PSU is not suitable for my system under strain (I will have to calculate the usage again since I don't remember why I went for "Corsair CXM 500W modular 80 plus" instead of 600W (or more) option), or the PSU is failing (it has a 3 year warranty so that's a positive) or it could be the motherboard (although again very unlikely since everything else seems to be working).

All in all, I'm very confused with all this - it seemed to be most likely that it's the PSU in some way, but why would Windows not load again (so not under strain at all, starting from scratch). I also don't get why it would be Trine 2 (the first time round) and Rocket league (now with the new GPU) that would cause "strain" on the system - it's not like these are graphics hungry games. Aaaaarghh (grunts in frustration)!!
