If you want to use the media creation tool, just download the media creation tool here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 , and run the program. Click on the upgrade this pc option when you get to it and follow the onscreen steps. Very simple and easy.

Otherwise, you can do it through the GWX (get windows 10) app that was hopefully downloaded to your pc via windows update. Is it safe? Of course, I doubt MS will be plotting to install malware on its consumers computers.

Both ways will do the same thing so it doesn't matter how you do it really, just pick one.

No you misunderstand, the media creation tool will not clean install, it will upgrade your OS, exactly like the GWX app. And no, it will not come with a product key, since it will be the same product key you have for 8.1. W10 changed how they do activation this time around, when you upgrade with a genuine version of windows installed, your hardware will be saved to MS's servers as a genuine machine. It's called digital entitlement, look it up its a bit different from how they used to do it.

A third option is to make a bootable windows 10 drive(using the media creation tool's upgrade another pc option), install it, and input your current product key(assuming you have one for 8.1), and voila you'll have windows 10 and it'll be fresh installed. 2 birds one stone if you will.

You should go down the upgrade route first, then if you want to reinstall AFTER you've upgraded, then you can without any problems. Just skip inputting a product key when you do eventually fresh install. And no, w10 does not require you to have a MS account to activate it. You can use w10 without a MS account, it just shuts you out of some features if you don't.

On both of the systems I mentioned earlier I accomplished this by first downloading the Windows 10 Installation Media creation tool from Microsoft and selecting Upgrade this PC option to begin an in place upgrade. The Windows 10 update that downloads from Windows Update using the Get Windows 10 app performs an in place upgrade as well. Just keep to the same edition and architecture as I mentioned in my second point earlier.

For those of you worried about clean installs at this point there is an option with both of these methods to choose what you keep on your system – all of your files and apps, personal files only or nothing.

Selecting nothing will give you a brand new activated Windows 10 install that does not contain any of your previous operating system in it – a clean install for all intents and purposes. Plus it is an upgrade that will create the hardware hash for activation now and in the future.

Is this true ? By selecting ''nothing to keep'' on media creation tool , will come with a brand new activated window 10? cause i want to make a clean install

By selecting ''nothing to keep'' , am i able to return/downgrade to my previous version of window on window 10?
