Hi!

Just bought a i5 6600k 3.5 Ghz and i have a quick question. Since i was low on cash i could'nt do the update to the DDR4 RAM so i am still stuck with my Gskills Ripjaws X 2133 and i was wondering if the CPU will be fine with this kind of RAM since i saw on the shop website that this cpu is compatible with DDR3L which is different from what i currently have.

and if it helps you, i have a ASUS Z170-P D3 for my motherbord.

Am i gonna blow my PC? (joke)

Thanks!

Solution

The motherboard does not care what the RAM voltage is, all it does is provide power and copper traces between the CPU and DIMM slots. The CPU's memory controller is designed primarily for DDR4, support for DDR3L is mainly provided as a convenience and interoperability with regular DDR3 is untested - use at your own risk.
voltage L =1.35v

but asus thinks its fine [I guess they know better then intel ??]

Intel only rates Skylake's memory controller for up to 1.35V. If you use standard DDR3 which runs at 1.5-1.65V, you may burn the CPU's memory controller out. It may work but is not recommended nor officially supported by Intel.

i am not overclocking anything really, i just want to know if it works together. the voltage looks like it is going to be the main problem since my ram is 1.5v but on newegg, they say that my motherboard will be fine but its the CPU thats doesnt work

''they say that my motherboard will be fine but its the CPU thats doesnt work ''

that's a good one - no you using the chip outside its speced parameter's the chip is guaranteed to work fine as speced ??? you going over the limits where is this intels fault in any way ???

The motherboard i use supports up to 2133 but you need to overclock to get to this range

if i dont overclock my DDR3 2133 it means that my RAM will be set at 1600 by default. if i make sure my RAM goes down between 1.2 or 1.3v and that it is at 1600 will it still damage the CPU?

The memory controller only cares about the 1.35V maximum. If you can manage to run your DDR3 at 1.35V or less, the CPU will be fine with whatever clock speed you manage to run it at. Even 2133MT/s if you are that lucky. It is nearly impossible to damage a CPU by increasing clock speed while remaining at stock voltages as long as there is a heatsink properly attached.
