why can i hear an mkv file on windows media player but no video, just shows a music symbol

MKV files are open format files, but not natively supported by Windows Media Player. However, there are many players that will play them, such as VLC.
What you are lacking are the video codecs.
Install any media player that can play it to get the video codecs into the computer, then play the video with player of your choice.
Some like VLC, I myself tend to favor mediaplayer classic (yes, looks like ancient windows media player but it is lightweight as far as resources go)
