When I start-up my PC, the motherboard splash is a series of pink, blue and green squares and lines, similar to this:

.

This has been happening for while along with daily (sometimes many a day) greenscreen crashes with my Sapphire Nitro R9 380, but I could still access the desktop and run applications fine until the crash. Yesterday it crashed (green-screen) and I have been unable to get to the Windows login menu. I get the normal blue bars in the top left-hand corner of the screen, and multicoloured pixels in a small line at the top of the screen and I don't reach the login screen. I tried two other cards (one may be faulty anyway) and I got the exact same result.

Does anyone know if this is a motherboard problem, or a GPU problem, or perhaps something else? I would appreciate any help, thanks.

Tested the monitor with a laptop with the same cable and it is working fine. I'll try to test the GPU in another PC tomorrow. I only have my current PSU unfortunately, so I won't be able to try another one. It doesn't have an iGPU.

Thanks very much for your help.

My fans spin and remain spinning when I startup my PC. Is this test necessary? Sorry if this response seems stupid, I'm a noob when it comes to hardware diagnostics.

I've tested the PSU in another PC with my current GPU and it booted to desktop without any issue. Does this mean either my motherboard or my CPU is at fault?

My CPU has been installed for at least a year with the current heatsink. Is a bent pin likely to occur after successful installation? I'm a little reluctant because the my aftermarket heatsink on the AM3+ socket is very fiddly.

No, my PC has been functioning fine for years through steady upgrades. Sorry I didn't make that clear. My GPU temp idles at 43 Celsius. The only game I have played recently (last two months or so) is Terraria - where the GPU reaches 45 Celsius.

My PC doesn't work with any GPU. All three that I tried give the exact same result.

Is there any way to detect whether the motherboard or the CPU is at fault without testing the components in another PC? I'm not able to do that. If not, do you know which is more likely to be at fault?

I'm going to assume the motherboard is at fault here - seems more likely to me. Thanks very much for your help, it's much appreciated.
