Brand new PC using intel graphics instead of its actual card

Hey all, I just received my new desktop PC earlier today and for some reason it wont use its graphics card.
The card itself, a GT 740 is appearing in the device manager alongside an "intel HD 4400" which I guess is an integrated thing.
I checked DXdiag and my PC only seems to be recognising the intel graphics, as do the games I just installed, which caused them to barely run.
How to I get my PC to utilise the GT 740 card instead?
I just installed the nvidia driver software from a disc that came with the PC and this didn't seem to visibly change anything.
If I try to access nvidia control panel I get the message "you are not currently using a display connected to an nvidia GPU".
Bizarrely the "GeForce experience" software mentions a 700 series card being present with a green tick next to it.
I have windows 10, 8 GB ram and an I3 processor, not changed any settings since taking the pc out the box earlier.
Thanks

Solution
Silly question, but is your monitor attached to a port on the graphics card or a port on your motherboard? You have to attach it to the graphics card to use the graphics card.

I'm not actually sure. How would I find out? As far as I can tell there are two video connector type slots on the back of the PC, the ones with the screw in pin holes on each end. The monitor connector cable only fits in one of them which is the top one.

Thanks WyomingKnott you were spot on, turns out the monitor was plugged into the wrong input.
Right near the bottom of the PC there was another connector port which was horizontal, all the rest are vertical and I overlooked it.
I decided to try and plug the monitor cable into this slot, its not very secure as I can't screw it in but the card seems to be working now.
