SLI GTX 970s over GTX 980ti

As i already have a GTX 970 is it better to spend £230 on another GTX 970 and have SLI or £420+ on a GTX 980ti

SLI doesn't always work well, or isn't always supported (and we can't predict FUTURE games).

4GB is starting to be the MINIMUM recommended when buying a graphics card. SLI is still 4GB effective (VRAM is cloned). We will see some DX12 titles add memory (up to 8GB effective if 2x4GB) but that will be a slow process.

Lack of ASync Compute in hardware may prove a big performance difference. AMD's current and the upcoming Polaris, Pascal should support this.

You also haven't specified your RESOLUTION and FPS goals. For example, do you have a 2560x1440, 144Hz monitor? Do you have a GSYNC monitor?

Personally, I would do one or both of the following:

1) Save for a good GSYNC monitor, and/or

2) Wait and upgrade to a high-end, single, Pascal card with 8GB VRAM (then sell the GTX970).

While I am suggesting to wait, I think making a statement like you did without qualifying is a bit problematic.

We don't know pricing.
We don't know performance.
We don't have solid dates and availability.

It would be nice if the X70 had say 50% higher performance than the GTX970 for $400USD or so but we just don't have this data.

You'll be waiting for another year. If that's no problem. great!

Where are you getting your information on release dates?

From what I understand we're getting X70, and X80 variants likely closer to June 2016 for which the X80 may be closer to a current GTX980Ti, with the "X80Ti", HBM2 variant likely closer to Q1 2017. Pricing for the top-end card may be pretty high as well.

Nothing verified, but it's looking probably like THIS: http://www.christiantoday.com/article/nvidia.pascal.gpu.x80.x80ti.and.x80.titan.release.date.specs.release.roadmap.for.next.gen.gpus.seen.online.specs.revealed/82888.htm

I imagine the X80 will have specs similar to:
a) 8GB GDDR5X
b) GTX980Ti performance (for current games, and relatively better for well optimized DX12)
c) 60% approx TOTAL power draw (compared to GTX900 series at same performance)

Pricing will be problematic as the MSRP is often higher for new GPU architectures. Most people get confused on this. NVidia sells GPU's in bulk to card makers who in turn set pricing. The price is set for several months so NVidia can't quickly change what it's asking if the cards sell at higher prices (it protects NVidia/AMD the other way as well).

Yes. When I answered this, I'd read some article talking about the server side card, and I'd gathered, from what they said, that no consumer card was due until the end of the first Q of 2017. My mistake.
