Should i go for single desktop or dual m series?

Depends on the full specs, but the desktop with gtx 980 will outperform the laptop all the time (unless you pair it with a terrible CPU of course).

Budget must be decent if you're looking at sli 980m, the desktop 980 is a 4gb only and is also available in a laptop form factor which I would take over 980m sli.
