My computer random hangs, so basically it freezes and becomes completely unresponsive. The display remains on and everything stays powered (fans, motherboard, display, gpu, everything). I have factory reset my computer and the problem persists, so I'm thinking it's a hardware problem. I have tested both sticks of ram, problem persists, I have all drivers up to date. Any ideas as to what is the problem?

Hey there, LooseMoose.

Have you noticed when this started to happen and do you remember doing anything in particular at that time? Any OS updates, driver updates, software installations, etc?
Unfortunately if it's not your RAM, it's really possible this to be caused by a drive issue. That's why I'd recommend that you backup any important data which you might have on your HDD/s and after that download the HDD manufacture's diagnostic tool (or a 3rd party one if you don't know the manufacturer) and test the drive/s for bad sectors and errors.

Please let me know how it goes.

Hi, no I didn't do anything in particular when it started happening, it doesn't happen extremely frequently (occurring about 3-5 times a day now but previously less). Also I don't remember any OS updates or anything that could've been the root cause of the issue. I have factory reset my pc since it has started.

If it helps my system specs are:
gtx 970
i5 4690
gigabyte h97 gaming 3 mobo
kingston hyperx ram (2 x4gb)
samsung 850 evo ssd
seagate hdd

Hey again, so I've tried running a few HDD tests, when I ran the SMART test, all the results have been positive, however every time I have attempted a 'long generic' test seatools my computer has crashed before completion. I have tried ~5 times to do the test, and it has crashed every time. Does this likely mean that my HDD is the root cause of the problem?

You should also try the drive with different SATA cables, to see if the issue reoccurs or a different computer. It's weird that it has failed to complete the test (not actually failed the test). It could be a cables issue, but just to be on the safe side, I'd recommend that you backup your data. You should test the SSD for errors as well.
