How much should I overclock and what temps are safe?

So today I decided to overclock my cpu as when having games open and programs I need to use, I saw that the cpu was at 100% usage most of the time. I have a i7 4790k and overclocked to 4.6 Ghz. When I booted everything was fine so I decided to run some stress tests. The temps were around 80-90C which I think is a bit too high. What temp should it be around to be safe for the cpu and is 4.6Ghz too high? My cooler is CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo (120mm)

Hey Frozen,

80-90C is very hot for your CPU in-fact hot enough for me to say turn off your PC.

If you PC is running at 100% jumping stright to overclocking your PC might not be the best Idea there are other bettery ways to improve performace, the 4790K is a pretty powerful CPU and already runs at a decent GHZ.

REMEMBER = Overclocking a CPU will infringe on your warranty and you are technically damaging your CPU especially if you don't do it the right way!

What is the temps on when running nothing in Windows?

I have since changed it back to 4.4ghz which is a setting already with the processor. The running temps were around 45 when idle.

Yeah I was using prime and cpu-z to run the tests

Still wondering though if 4.4 is a good place to leave it or if maybe i configured something wrong to cause the fans/temp to increase to much. Cause now at 4.4ghz even when the cpu usage is at 100% the fans barely do anything(which is how it was already set) as the temp is only around 55C to 65C so it must be alright like this. Surely that 0.2ghz change wouldnt make the temps increase by nearly 30C?
