What are the dangers of *letting* your cpu overheat?

To make a long story short, I removed my CPU and put it back in again. But now the thermal paste is all messed up, and the screws for the fan won't catch in the backboard...

A new CPU + fan will be here tomorrow morning and I'm planning on installing it properly. But is it okay to use what I have tonight? I'll be throwing it out anyway, so it can catch fire for all I care. But I want to make sure nothing else in the computer will get damaged.

Solution
Well, I mean, it shouldnt damage anything else if you do (it probably wont even damage itself.
That being said, there is no reason to do that. Keep it as a backup or sell it, dont purposefully overheat it (though once again, shouldnt do anything)
The thermal paste shouldnt have anything to do with the cooler not mounting, it should still work.
