Replaced Comcast Router/Modem combo and getting slower speeds!

Hello everyone! Hopefully you can help me out with my issue.

I just bought the TP Link Archer C9 Router and a TP Link TC-7610 3.0 DOCSIS Modem.

Comcast internet is 250mbps

I am using windows 10.


I wanted to replace the comcast router/modem because of poor speeds in my bedroom so I purchased the TP products listed above.

While using the comcast router, I am getting 260mbps on the speed tests. While using the new router I am capping out at around 90mbps.

I am sure I am connected to the 5ghz connection as if I connect to the other one I am only getting around 40 mbps.


Am I missing some simple solution or does the router just not work as well?

More than likely, Comcast is providing you with 250 megabit per second service. Bandwidth is usually referred to in bits. Storage, however, is usually referred to in bytes, and some speed tests give you the measurement in bytes. That's why when transferring from a hard disk or flash drive, you would see it measured in MB (megabytes), rather than Mb (megabits), but even the whole uppercase / lowercase thing here is less than standard.

250 megabits translates into about 31 megabytes of throughput, if you're working with an 8-bit byte, which would be ideal, and the better looking of the two possibilities. Some transmission standards are 10-bit bytes, which would drop you to 25 megabytes of throughput.

5 GHz has lousy penetration. If...
Couple things to point out here... When you test your router speeds, the highest capable in perfect conditions over wireless 5GHz band is 1300 Mbps, which roughly translates to 130 MBps real world, and that's at it's best, the second thing to note, is that your wired connection is probably on a 10/100/1000 port, highest speed at 1000 real world MBps. And remember, that has to be both ends. If your wireless card in your computer caps out at 150Mbps 5GHz band, then that's as fast as it will go, regardless of how fast it's sent. Without a lot more information, it's kinda hard to say where the issue lies. If you need fast, go wired maybe even the powerline adapters would provide you with more throughput.

I just tested a wired connection and the download speeds are the exact same as wireless.


If 130mbps is the real world limit, why am I getting 250ish when connected to the old comcast router?
 


Not sure TBH. With coaxial and a 250MBps connection to the interwebs, you should see near peak with high end routers. Now, the old Comcast Modem? Or Router? If it's the old modem, not sure, if it's the old router, the old router was probably faster than the new one you bought, new doesn't always mean fastest, also. not sure how it plays a part here, but there's MU-MIMO to worry about too, others could be leaching from you. Just tossing ideas BTW, I am by no means an expert, it confuses me too. Particularly which parts are in Bytes and which parts are in Bits.

Your original post is confusing. You said, you were getting poor results from the Comcast router, but that it was delivering 260 mbps bandwidth out of your 250 mbps that you were supposed to be getting. This sounds like better than ideal to me. What are the numbers from your bedroom, since that is the machine you are complaining has the problem? It can't be 260 mbps can it?
