Attempting to update my drivers, it appears I accidentally installed the latest Intel chipset driver for a Xeon (v10.1.2.19) on my Z97 motherboard. I should have installed the v10.1.1.14 driver.

10.1.2.19 for Xeon

10.1.1.14 for Z97

Are these just software drivers that I can uninstall/get rid of or did I do actual harm to my motherboard?

Solution

Even intel say on their site "Intel provides generic versions of drivers for general purposes. Your computer manufacturer may have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to your driver. Intel recommends you contact your computer manufacturer for the latest system specific updates and technical support information." http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html, scroll down, These are the kind of drivers your update app or softpedia...

Why are you downloading drivers from a third party. Go to the makers site and download latest drivers for your model motherboard + revision number choose the Windows edition and just download the latest drivers from them, give me the make/model of the board i will give you a link

Because the chipset driver version under my mobo on asus's website is only 10.1.1.7 and in general the mftr's websites never have the latest drivers. Some do this all the time for the most current drivers.

You didn't answer my question though.

I am very aware I can remove and install the correct driver, BUT, by installing the incorrect one earlier (v10.1.2.19)... Have I done any damage to the board?

Was there any firmware flashed that could have whacked something out? Will a driver uninstall remove all the incorrect chipset driver stuff? Can you just install the correct driver on top of the incorrect one. Should I reinstall windows to be sure. Etc. Stuff like that.

And that's version 10.1.1.7, which is not the latest WHQL version released by Intel (10.1.1.14)

10.1.1.7 should be installed on top of the other, should be fine or use system restore point before you installed it, then install the correct asus driver

Understand. Interesting, that I didn't quite know. Careless it was, that I admit. Need to be more careful. I was surprised to find out nothing popped up saying that was the wrong driver software utility.

I just wanted to verify it is just that, software, and not firmware flashes and/or things that could or did cause damage or irreversible effects.

Nothing firmware and no it will be fine, it will overwrite the old and that will fix registry or use system restore to restore windows to an earlier point before you installed it, then install the correct asus driver to be sure
