General gtx 970 question about clocks.

I decided to up the frame rate cap on hearthstone from 60 to 80 just to see a preformance difference and it's quite nice actually.

I looked over at my gpu and my graphics clock was 924 and my memory clock maxed itself out... Why would it max out?

I'm currently on a 144mhz monitor set to 120hz and even at 120 hearthstone freaked out my card. Team fortress 2 also did this when I made the cap for that game to 120.

Just trying to get an understanding because my card should not be reaching 60c+ degrees I would think.

I am using hw monitor by cpuid or look at things.

I7 4790
16 gb ram
Gtx 970 not oc
550w psu seasonic

why should the memory not max out? it has some load, it running at full speed just means it is being used. as for the temps, 960s do not run their fans ( nor do most of the other Maxwell cards) until they are around 65C or so, so that makes sense for the card to be around 60. as seen by the core clock, the card is barely taxed.

I didn't think it should because I didn't think team fortress or hearthstone being above 60 fps would make it just max out like that.

I know the temps are fine, not worried about that. It also annoys me that when I'm switching between Windows my clocks max out for a minute before they go back down. But that's probably a rendering thing.

Just trying to make sure things are working as they should is all.

I am on a computer with an old fire pro right now, when I change windows the core clock and memory spike, it is just what GPUs do. if you had performance issues this would be another story, but the fact of the matter is, that is a normal 960.

I'm on a 970 not a 960 though I'm sure it's the same thing anyway...

If I am losing preformance, it's nothing I've noticed, sometimes there are some frame drops in games but it's problems I've run into before.

Only thing that annoys me is my audio on my headset cuts out for seconds sometimes when sharing on Skype but that's about it.

yes I apologize for the slip, it is a 970. those problems mentioned are not really GPU specific. skype is always odd. I really feel there is not an issue here.

Well if this issue actually causes anything bad I guess I'll worry about it then. If what you say is true, then there is nothing to worry about correct?

But just so we are clear, any game that runs more than 60 fps will max out my clocks? Also the only game I see real problems with is mtgo and that is random lag here and there. But the program is so bad that it could be a whole mess of problems and I would hope and doubt it's my gpu.

the memory clock running at full speed does not mean it is at full load. the 60 FPS mark is most likely arbitrary. pretty much if the card feels if needs extra horsepower, it raises it memory clock, but as the core clock is not raising, the card is not really struggling. I guess you could say it is like revving the car to accelerate it a bit, but not mashing the pedal. I am sure there are lighter games that will run at lower memory frequencies, as there is less data to pass through the memory. There should be absolutely nothing to worry about.

Funny enough, it maxes out its memory clock on a lot of stuff for seemingly no reason. Though I suppose most of this stems from paranoia.

I get worried about my temps and what not but I suppose just like everyone else tells me. Don't worry about it my temps are fine. Sometimes they hit 62 when I'm
Doing what I consider to be not so taxing things and I underestimate how hot the card gets I suppose.

Whenever the clocks act up, my temp goes up and it kind of freaks me out I suppose is the big thing. Recently built my comp and paid a good amount for it, just making sure everything is working well.

Any GPU intensive load shifts GPU in high performance mode - gpu clock and gpu mem clock goes up.
That's normal operation.
GPUs usually have several modes - 2d, 3d and boost.

If you're worried about gpu clocks going up, then don't play games.

But that kinda defeats purpose of having gaming graphic card.

I think it's that I underestimate how intensive even something like hearthstone or magic online can be.
