Ok so about 2 weeks ago my turned my pc off to go to my karate class, came back and turned my pc on, except for nothing appeared on my screen, it was just black. I tried unplugging it in and out, using different power cabled, etc. I then came to the conclusion that it died, so i sold it on ebay for $89 as not working. Yesterday I bought a gtx 970, i put in in and guess what, a black screen still . I put my really old gtx 560 in and picture came up again, i then made put the gtx 970 back in and made sure everything is in properly, turned my pc on and still back screen.

I then put gtx 560 back in and tried what someone said and uninstall the graphics card drivers, I then put gtx 970 back in and still nothing. I find it hard to believe that both my old gtx 960 and my new gtx 970 wont work with the exact same problem. I really have no idea what to do and now that i think about it my old gtx 960 probably wasn't even broken and someone scored himself a cheap 960.

Im so [CENSORED] ooff i feel like throwing my pc out the door, selling the gtx 970 and getting a playstation.

ok also uhmm i think i might have found the soultion but not sure. Im using the 6pin to 8 pin converter cable that came with the gpu and on the 8 pin side it has a missing bottom right pin. Is that normal?

I've had a cheap (but with a high watt number printed on it) PSU start dying with exactly those symptoms - it stops powering external devices that require a lot of juice (i.e., GPUs). Do you have another PSU handy or one you can borrow?

What's the brand and model/how old is it? 1050w is the manufacturer rating (and would be way overkill for your machine if true) for a new unit of that type. Many less than stellar / no-names in the game have been known to put out "500w" PSUs that would die well before seeing 500w. And even the best PSUs lose capacity over the years or can blow a capacitor or the like if there's been a power spike (esp without a good high quality surge strip) or even if there's just a brown out/slight dip in power (my brother's PC blew a new, high quality PSU because it was on the same circuit that my mother used for her vacuum - without an AVR/battery backup, every time the vacuum went on, the outlet power dipped just a bit and overtime killed the PSU).

to test an 100 amp psu with multi-meter it must one hell of a multi meter xD. Usually they are tested with a device which generates load on the psu (as the ones you see in psu reviews). If he has that it can use it and measure the voltage drop with a multi meter, it is not as simple as it looks at first sight to check a psu.

EDIT: As far as i remember when max load is applied to a psu it must not go below 11.7 V , 11.8V, 11.9V, i dont remember exactly on the 12V line (yellow cable) but you can research about that.

ok at this stage I really do hope it is the psu but if it was the psu why is it that my gtx 560 works but not gtx 970? Also It cannot be a coincidence that my old gtx 960 did the exactly the same thing, maybe i should message the buyer that bought my old card to see if it actually isn't broken

Alright so can power supplies actually lose power when they go faulty? Im just trying to rule out problems. I always thought they either work or they dont

in the bios on newer mb is temp and voltage reading make sure the 12v rail is above 11.6v power supply can fail on low voltage or ac ripple. to much ac ripple and pc may lock up or not post. also with the pc booting make sure the mb has the newest bios. some newer nvidia cards and mb had issues and vendors dropped bios updates.

Google DDU and use that to uninstall the current card before putting in the new one. Uninstalling all Nvidia software will only uninstall software. There are registry keys left behind. DDU usually cleans them out. On rare occasion, you have to manually clear those out. There are guides for that, but I haven't done it in far too long and usually feel my way through.

my psu should be coming tomorrow. I really hope thats the problem, also if it wasn't the problem would that mean the most likely cause is the motherboard? I tried removing and changing around the ram but still had the same problem so I've eliminated ram as a cause. Also same with my hard-drive.

got the psu today, installed it and bang doesn't work with the gtx 970 but works with the gtx 560. Is it possible that its my monitor? maybe it somehow lost power
