few questions on how to best utilize SSD

gathering info for a new system build, last build was done in 2008 and the rig still works great (many thanks to members suggestions and input here). a ton has changed and I come to you guys for help. My current build has 3 hds; raid raptors and a dedicated hd to the operating system.

With the advent of SSD, im trying to understand how to best utilize the technology. If you guys could please help me understand the following i would be most appreciative:


Is it still common practice to run the OS and a separate HD/SSD or can everything now be run installed on one SSD?

I dont have much need for massive storage, 500 gigs of SSD will be enough for me, is there any reason to add another SSD or HD?

Scandisk Extreme Pro seems to be the gold standard with SSD. Is this the SSD to buy for new rigs?

3. You really need another drive or something, to hold backups of your critical data, and probably an OS image.

i run everything off a 500gb --thats plenty for most people

and you can use the old drives for music/video etc that doesnt get accessed so often


the sandisk extreme is a fantastic usb flash drive but would take a samsung evo over the sandisk extreme ssd range

Yeah, the main issue is storage. If your SSD is big enough for all of your needs, go ahead and put it all there. (I do that on my laptops.) If not, but all the stuff that needs a snappy response (OS and such) there, and put the rest on a slower mechanical drive (like I do on my gaming machine and server.)

The practice started when SSDs were only 10-30G, which isn't enough to do anything. Now 250G+ ones are perfectly affordable.

im assuming you mean on my current computer; raptors were expensive back in the day so it amounts to ~250gigs currently with both of them. i have about 75 gigs of that free. 500 total gigs would be more than fine for my storage capacity needs but im curious to know if there is a benefit running dual SSDs

with ssd they do wear out (writes) it take some time but they will wear out. if you do a lot of downloading movie and music your better off using one drive for storage and one drive for back ups. today newer drives can die if you sneeze on them wrong. us old timers and modes see help i lost all my data posts on a daly basic. good to save to a hard drive if you can with cloud storage back up data that you cant lose.

as ssds are so fast the average user just doesnt need raid any more if using ssds

Thank you so much gents, that was extremely timely and thorough. I should also mention that the reason i have so much free space is because i have a TB of cloud space that stores everything.... better accessibility that way for me.

Samsung EVO it is, questions very well answered, thanks again

Also add in that the raid version 0 most people use for performance does NOT improve access times or random read/writes(something SSDs already do VERY well). Raid0's primary purpose was for sequential read/write operations(so if you are recording lots of uncompressed video it would help for sure. Video/image editing may also be helped when working with huge files).

Most of what we do on computers is rather random in nature(data is not perfectly lined up for it).
