I have an old 1TB Western Digital external HDD. It's model number is E101559 or 1311D.

I think it was supposed to be for Xp and 2000 but I clearly remember using it Vista. However when I connect it to Win 10 -it makes a sound but nothing shows up in device manager or Disk management. No drive without a letter either.

It showed installing driver and all but still not showing up anywhere?

Suggestions?

No, haven't done that. I don't have a pc anymore. Just a laptop.

Yes, I tried all three ports on my laptop. I'll try connecting it with old computer but that in itself is behaving very iffy lol

Please do. I'll be here when you're ready.

Ok tried a different computer. All it does it make a sound but the drive doesn't appear anywhere at all.

Why make a sound and show a bar that something is being installed when it won't even show up?

I don't think there is any point of getting the drive out of it's case since it hooks but doesn't show up neither in disk management nor in device management.

It's possible that the interface that converts the SATA to USB isn't working. Since you don't have a desktop it's impossible to test the drive directly without buying something like a USB hard drive dock. It's really up to you whether you want to do this or not.

Also, before I forget, are you using the correct power adapter for the drive?

Hi there varun12,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(
This should be WD My Book right?

Is the OS of the other computer Win 10 as well? You need to attach the drive to a system that is not on Win 10.
Is the drive spinning up? You can do is to attach the drive with different cables and see if this would make any difference.

You should keep in mind that there is a chance that the model is hardware encrypted(or may have proprietary connectors). This means that you will not be able to access the data if the drive is out of the enclosure.

Is the drive recognized by BIOS?

If the cable thing doesn't work and the drive is nowhere to be recognized on another system(Device Manager, Disk Management and BIOS), then there is something wrong with the Enclosure or the HDD itself. In both cases, in case the data is crucial, you will need to look for some professional data recovery help.

You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=oxFQBr

Let us know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Hi guys,

This is a big black HDD -on the website it says it was compatible with xp and vista. I've used it on vista.
When I unplug the device- it feels like a motor is coming to a stop which I'd presume is the HDD ergo the device seems to be working.

I'm using WD adapter that came with the drive but the USB that goes into the computer might be a different USB than that I might have gotten because this is a very old drive and I might have lost it.

So no point of opening it right unless I can plug it in a computer?

Other nonsense is that my old desktop Quadcore which had vista on it- I think main HDD got corrupted and now it doesn't even boot.

Now I don't know what to do when the computer doesn't even boot or show up anything at all on the screen.

So even that computer has 1 TB HDD and 1 500gb main partition. Nonsense!

If the computer isn't showing anything on-screen it's worse than an HDD issue. Could be your graphics card, motherboard, or power supply. If it were simply a bad HDD it would say "no boot device found" when you load up the computer.

Of course it could also be something simple, like the video cable not being plugged in all the way, video card not being seated properly, RAM not seated properly, ect.

Two different issues bro. One is the My book essential edition 1TB HDD that doesn't show up in my laptops

Second issue the vista computer I tried to turn on-does display anything on the screen because well I think it's own HDD is corrupted as well because wires are all the way in - it comes with the connectors that has screws that need to be tightened lol.
