So here's the situation: I'm connected to my modem using an ethernet cord, enjoying some online games with my friends. My dad turns on his computer and loads up Facebook to check what people are eating for lunch. I suddenly seem a bit jittery and proceed to check my ping, normally it sits at about 50-70 ms. However, I am surprised by the number before me, 2000 ms! How?! I can use Facebook, even YouTube, on my computer whilst gaming without too much interference.

So, my question to you, to the glorious community of Tom's Hardware, what could be causing this, and how may this problem be overcome?

Modem is a Technicolor TG797n v3 if that helps at all.

The Technicolor TG797n v3 is both modem and router.

Your computer is a network device connected to the router.

From your viewpoint the router controls network traffic and can sometimes be used to prioritize traffic with respect to the connected devices. Referred to as QoS (Quality of Service).

You did not mention other users but I would expect that there are some wireless users as the router supports wireless as well.

Bottom line is that the router provides both QoS and Parental Controls as I understand the User Manual options.

And your Dad controls the router.....

Time for a family sit-down and discussion to work things out so everyone can share appropriately.
