Upgrade from a GTX 690 to a GTX 980ti or wait?

I'm wondering if I should wait longer to upgrade or not. I'm playing at 1080p 120hz and 2GB of VRAM is starting to become limiting. I'm having to put games on lowest settings to maintain 120hz now and if SLI isn't supported, I get screwed over. Any thoughts? I'm also going to have to sell my 690 to afford a 980ti, so that is another issue I'll run into if I do wait.

Solution
That EVGA 980 ti is a SOLID card. Great choice.

If your sticking with 1080P for a while, then just go ahead and get the 980 ti, don't even think twice about pascal. Basically, pascal is going to be the first aritecture in my opinion that will be overkill for 1080P. Kind of like how maxwell and kepler are way overkill for 720P gaming.

Well I recently was in a similar situation and decided to upgrade. I know Pascal gets closer everyday but I like performance now. I went from a 780, to a 980ti and I'm very pleased, this card is a beast. Also you will get more for your 690 now than later. Some will say wait, but if you want the immersion and gameplay experience it is worth the upgrade.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Does anyone know approximately when Nvidia announces their new line up? I've been reading up and people say that they won't release a 80ti of the next series until next year, but I don't know. I'm still torn between waiting or not. How are you liking the performance so far? One of the main reasons I do want to upgrade is because of the division.

Yea who knows, could be quite awhile longer until we see pascal, maybe end of this summer but not likely. I LOVE the performance of this card, specifically the higher end 980ti variants are strong. I have been able to pull off 4k in most of my games by lowering a few other settings to medium levels but still running mostly high-ultra and its amazing. So pleased I didn't need to sli for solid performance in 4k. For 1080p and 1440p this card destroys everything, even Witcher 3, and Witcher 3 seems to be my only game that can challenge it in 1080p, I play Witcher 3 in 4k as well with medium settings. So yea, I can highly recommend the 980ti, it is a card I will have for 2 years minimum.

Alright, thanks for the help! I'll probably buy one in a few days. I mostly want it for 1080p 120hz gaming. I'm just really glad to get away from SLI. I plan to get this 980ti: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487142&cm_re=EVGA_GeForce_GTX_980_Ti_Super_Clocked_Gaming-_-14-487-141-_-Product
Any opinions on it?

Awesome, thanks for the help! Yeah, I plan to stick to 1080P at least till I finish college, so another 2 years. I've been really out of the hardware scene and upgrading since I've been so busy with my computer science courses. After that I'll start looking into higher resolutions. You don't happen to know roughly how much I could still get for my 690?

Depends, are you selling on craigslist? I sold my 780 for like 220 I think, on CL

So probably abit lower, but again depends on your area. I just looked on Craigslist, couldn't find a 690 anywhere but found a few 780s for around 200.

I'll probably go the Ebay route. I was looking on craigslist near my area of what they were generally going for, but of course there wasn't anyone selling one.

Totally wait on upgrading to the 980 ti. As Nvidia is about to unveil the pascal series GPU's come May/June. Honestly though unless your getting like 30 fps hold off tell they give out more info on pascal. With the little bit of information given the GTX 1080 is releasing with 8gb of GDDR5x Vram apparently in the summer. That alone right there is worth a small wait. With pascal giving 10x the throughput of Maxwell. Spending 600/700 now you could get a better card for maybe close to the same price or a bit more. Link is the small info already on pascal.

I would also say around $200, maybe even $250. It's still a powerful card despite the vram issues.

That's what you'd use your time travel for? Not stocks and lotto numbers? :D

Oh yeah...I forgot about that. :p

Someone paying $180 for a used 4GB GTX 680 in February seems a poor choice when they could have gotten a new 4GB R9 380 for the same price.

(paying the same price for the same level of performance but risking on an old and used card vs a new one with a warranty)
