WD external hard drive shows up as a logical drive under Lifeguard. Won't let me run Lifeguard diagnostics

Solution
Welcome, Steven!

I'm going to second @Phillip's suggestion and advise you to run the DOS version of the WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics software. You should be able to find the utility once you select your WD product here.

You should follow the instructions precisely and create a bootable flash drive with the testing tool. Once you do that make sure you run both the QUICK and EXTENDED tests in order to determine the health and SMART status of the external drive.
Another thing you could try is connecting the HDD to a different computer and attempt to run the diagnostic tests from there.

Keep us posted with the troubleshooting!
