I have gone through numerous solutions to try and get life back in to my desktop.

Sympton: would not power up, motherboard has green light, but no components will power up.

1st attempt: new PSU, that wasnt it, should have realized that since MB was getting power this probably was not it.

2nd attempt: new memory (was wanting to upgrade memory and amount anyways) so new Corsair Dominator 16gb DDR3 RAM - still no powering up. tried all slots and numbers of sticks.

3rd attempt: new motherboard. Changed out my Intel DP55KG with an ASUS P7P55D EVO, still no powering up.

I have even tried a different power switch from another tower that I know was working, still no powering up.

Am I right to think that now I am down to just a possible fried CPU (Intel i7 socket 1156)???
I get no beeps or any sign of life at all.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Solution
For gaming the i7 makes little difference, but it may for other tasks. The i5 6600 is faster than the i7 870, except for highly threaded applications like WinRAR; the i7 6700 is faster no matter what the application is.

Thank you for this tip. Will try this evening after work.

I presume that you meant disconnect the CPU fan and not removing the heatsink.

Did you test it outside of the case with only the CPU, cooler and one memory module? You don't even need a keyboard. Connect your monitor to the motherboard and temporarily jump the power switch pins on the motherboard's front panel connector. A CPU can fail, but they rarely do.

I meant what I said, some boards will fire up without a fan( i think), but none that I know will fire up without heatsink.

No motherboard can detect a missing cooler; they can only detect a missing or not spinning CPU fan. Remove the heatsink on your CPU and you'll have no problem powering up your system. A motherboard can detect a CPU that overheats and shut down if need be, but it doesn't beep. The Intel DP55KG has a piezo, but the P7P55D EVO requires a case speaker or piezo; otherwise it can't beep.

ok, I have nothing connected except a case fan and 1 memory. I have tried with the heat sink fan connected, and without. All while the 8 pin power connector is not connected, only the 24 pin power.

When I do this, the case fan and even the heat sink fan and the fan on the psu start to spin the immediately stop.

any ideas???

Outside of the case? Not connecting the 8 pin cable is useless because the CPU needs it to work. Unfortunately it looks like the CPU is defective.

so both motherboards when tested barebones show the same symptom??...????
I know its rare, but I can't think of anything else other than the CPU. am I wrong in thinking this?

This all began when I went in to office one day and computer was off, pressed power button and it made a noise like it was about to start up then just died. this was:
Intel DP55kg board
i7 870 cpu
4gb DDR3 Ram

I thought it was the PSU, and instead of investigating, just ordered a new PSU. Replaced it and still nothing, no life to it at all. nothing would power up, but the board still had the green light on it, but that was it.
I ordered new memory, simply cause I wanted to upgrade memory and have more. So I ordered 16GB DDR3 Corsair Dominator RAM.
I then ordered the ASUS P7P55D Evo board.

Put new PSU, ASUS board, New Memory, and same i7 cpu. still nothing!!!

I tried going bare bones with just memory, cpu fan, and case fan. They all started to spin then immediately stopped. (This happened using both boards, in and out of case)

so this is where I am at. I have 2 different boards available, brand new memory, brand new PSU (and a old one that works just fine I found out) and the i7 CPU.
