Looking for an upgrade: 970 seems to fit my needs. Should I wait for Pascal?

Well, a while ago, I had bought an Alienware x51 r2 on sale, specs: i7 4790, 8gb ddr3 1600mhz, r9 270, 330w psu. I know that many owners of the x51 have upgraded to the 970, and I'm planning on doing so as well. However, I am debating about buying the 970 now, or wait until Pascal, do you guys think that Pascal will have anything with similar price to performance to power draw to the 970? Also, I am looking at the PNY GeForce GTX 970 4GB Rev 2: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133620
Thanks in advance!

Fair enough, a 970 will do GTAV justice and other games perfectly fine.

Not much has been confirmed about Pascal however it is set to be coming very soon so waiting would be the best option.
And even when it comes out and if you cant support it Maxwell cards should of come down in price anyway.

We can only assume that they'll be in the same price range since none have ever broke this trend.

edit: they're supposed to be released in Q3 of 2016 and announced at GTC 2016 so not long to wait
article about it - http://wccftech.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-1070-computex-2016/

Personally, I would wait it out until Pascal since you are still able to play until then and even if there isn't something you want release (Which I think WILL, for less most likely) the 970 will maybe reduce in price, it especially will if there is an opposing pascal GFX. So it is a win win really.

-Wait it out, if there isn't anything released, then the 970 will most likely be a little cheaper anyway so just bite the bullet and get it.
-If there is a 970 equivalent then the 970 will be reduced, see if there is a performance gain that justifies the extra money for the new card ad if not then just buy the GTX 970.

Hope it helps

Thanks for your input man, really appreciate it, though what I'm thinking now is that I'll buy a 970 now, as everything else in my build is last-gen, and then by the time Pascal comes out and is affordable, I'll start a whole build with just next-gen components (Kaby/Cannonlake, full tower, expensive things, led lights, etc.)

My reason for wanting an upgrade so soon is that I can barely play anything at 60fps unless I turn all the settings on low, which makes pretty games like GTA 5 stuff look like crap.

Where anywhere have we seen an actual release date for pascal? We havent even seen a working card in demo yet let alone had a release date. People keep talking about computex but Nvidia have said nada we dont actually even know they will be the 1000 series except for a couple of mocked up pics of a stock cooler with GTX 1070/1080 on them. Even if it launches at computex launch and mass production are pretty different things. It's also not really Nvidias style they are more likely to host their own even t launch their card not squish themselves into the Computex calander. Im pretty sure that the 900 series were released at their own 24hr gaming event not at a major show. I dont personally expect to see them alter from that format.

Look if you game at 1080p on a 60hz panel then a 970 or a R9 390x will do you just perfect. Both will push 60 fps on maxed settings with most games you might need a little tweak here and there. If you don't but im guessing you do based on your current card then look at the alternatives, the second hand market is bouncing for cards right now. What you will need to do regardless if its not a typo is uprate that PSU. 330w is pretty under gunned.

You could use the EVGA step up 90 day program and get a 970 now, roll the dice that the next gpus come out before 07/11/16 of which you will get your full cash value toward the next GPU and you get to game better now. Waiting till 05/01/16 or after something is announced would be a safer bet as gpus should be out before 08/01/16.
