Best service to access home server outside of network?

Hello everyone!

I have a small, simple server setup at home Where i will have my project files, movies, etc. I have already set up in-network sharing of relevant folders, and I was astonished how well it performed with high transfer speeds allowing me to keep work files on the server as I work on them.

I have become interested in expanding this concept to become a dropbox-type replacement, where I always have access to my files on my laptop in other networks. After stumbling upon this article, I learned that is very doable. However my ideal dream scenario is where unlike Dropbox, or seemingly any of the services in the article, I DO NOT want copies of the files on the client device. I would like to have the equivalent experience of mapping a network drive, where there is a consistent file path, and yet the files are not taking space on my device and instead changes would directly be affecting the server's files (at reduced internet speeds).

So I would like to know two things.

1. Is this dream scenario of 'mapping' a server's drive through software possible, and if so, what would you recommend?

2. If it is impossible or severely lacking, what service would you recommend for Dropbox-like ease of use on client computers?

Thank you so much for your help!

Sounds quite interesting, you're talking about the Hamachi service yeah? Being a service that would run on my laptop. do you have any idea how it could affect battery life?

Great suggestion though, I will seriously consider it.
