Hi the problem is i cant get the pc to boot with 2x8gb ddr3 is inserted into the dual channel memory slots.

It will boot when there inserted with the ram together in single channel memory slots.

Motherboard:asrock z170 fatality gaming k4/d3
Ram:corsair vengeance pro ddr3 2x8gb 2400mhz
Cpu:i5 6600k

Any help will be much appreciated this is my first build so still learning the basics .

Solution
Both boards you mention are good choices. If you want sli (or even crossfire, you want that second slot at x8) in the future get the K6,this one of the two supports that.

Im clueless i didnt notice untill after i bought the board it was ddr3 even though the d3 is a big give away to people who know what there doing..

So there is nothing i can do to get it to run in dual channel memory then.

The ram was running at 1333mhz but i enabled X.M.P and its now running at 2400mhz

would there be any difference to gaming performance running it single channel/dual channel ?

I have tried 2 different profiles 1866 & 2266 and its just doing the same thing when i press the power button the pc turns on but the monitor light is flashing

Dont know what to do now think i will call it a night thanks anyway guys

You'll probably have to make a custom profile that copies the timings of a supported memory type

You might want to reseat the cooler,if too much pressure on one side of the cpu could it be that one channel will not work properly.Use some new paste for that.If using the stock cooler and have no new paste yet,at least look if all four pins are pushed well into the motherboard.

Maybe what is possible is that with the higher speed the voltage goes up as well. The newer cpu's are not accustomed to that.Try a speed that uses the lowest possible voltage, probably 1600mhz@1.5V and see if that works.Maybe even try 1333mhz at 1.35V.This is why you want ddr4 with it's lower voltage needed. The memory controller on these new cpu's isn'treally meant to work with those higher voltage ram.

I contacted asrock and explained my problem they have said my bios isnt up to date and sent me the bios update in a file he said the update is for DRAM so i will see if that works if not i will try making my own profile as suggested

I will reseat the cooler as im using the h100i i think you all know how awkward it is to mount even.

Thanks again vic & basroil

I did the update last night still didnt cure the problem.

I took all the ram out cleared CMOS and inserted 1 stick in all four ports it will only boot from the first two ports and when inserted in the 3rd & 4th slots the led on the monitor just blinks.

Shouldnt it boot up from all 4 slots with only 1 stick of memory im starting to think the last two ports are broken i might pop it into the shop today see what they can tell me as its really starting to get on my nerves

The memory timing is really confusing i did change a few things tried rebooting with no change so just switched it all back to auto for now

Is there any idiot proof guides on how to change the memory timings and i will give it another go.

Thanks .

Im going to strip it down have a look at motherboard pins, reseat cooler and re apply thermal paste if that doesnt work i dont think i have any other choice but buy another motherboard :(

What do you think guys is the motherboard broken?

If so i will order a new one ddr4 this time and i will just selll the board for spares and sell the ram and buy a new board and new set of ram

Could be the motherboard, hard to say.

Saw ram list for the motherboard again.Saw this

Note6: Suggest to use A1 slot first when load X.M.P DDR3-2400+
means use just one stick in the closest ram slot to the cpu to set XMP,if it works add the other stick in the other channel. You could try that, maybe it works. If it doesn't work can you either rma the motherboard,or in that process maybe persuade the vendor to swap boards for a Z170/ddr4 version.Maybe he'll take the ram back as well or sell it and try ddr4 with the matching motherboard.

Thanks vic i will try that but to be honest i think the slots are dead i had a mess about with timings today tried setting them to the same as some off the list basroil linked me to.

I didnt buy the board from a shop it was from that famous auction site but i have left it too long to do anything about it but its not a massive loss i only paid £60 for the board once i put it back on i will probally get £20 back anything more is a bonus

Im not sure what board to buy do i go back with asrock for a z170 k4 or a z170 k6 what ever i buy its going to have warrenty :D

Why the hell would you ever do that??? Only buy new models from reputable stores.

If you're going to buy a new board, make the investment worthwhile and get DDR4

I think i will go with the k6 for the extra £28 i have found the k6 for £128 from scan computers.

I read a few reviews on the k4 and alot of people were saying it was a lemon.

I have already sold the ram to my buddy

Thanks Vic & basroil
