Hello, I am upgrading my CPU because of lack of performance while gaming, especially in single threaded games like world of tanks. Keep in mind I will be pairing this CPU with an r9 390 gpu... I was wondering if upgrading to an i7-4790 with a z97 mobo makes more sense, or if the i5-6600K for a hundred dollars cheaper is the better deal. I will have to upgrade my memory from ddr3 to ddr4 if i go for the skylake. I mostly play single threaded games or multi like battlefield. I do not do multiple tasks at once so my current 8 core is very overkill, especially for the types of videogames i play. Here are my specs...
Amd fx8350 cpu
Msi r9 390
Cooler master 212 evo
EVGA 800W
Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+ Mobo
Roswell challenger U3 mid tower case
AsusVG248QE monitor 1080p 144hz
Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory
WD caviar black HD

The difference between Haswell and Skylake is marginal - Skylake is marginally faster, draws marginally less power, and runs a bit cooler, but I doubt anyone could tell the difference between an i7 6700 and i7 4790 without being told which was which. Building from scratch I can see no reason not to go Skylake, but given that you already have some parts you can reuse, the older Haswell platform might be a perfectly fine choice.

If you go with an i7 4790, you don't need a Z97 board; you can get away with a cheaper H97 if you want to save a few dollars. There's also the option of going with a Broadwell i7 5775C or i5 5675c - they fit into Z97/H97, use DDR3, are clocked lower but have a pretty significant IPC advantage due to added L4 cache, and are comparatively power-sipping due to using the same 14nm process that Skylake is built on.

they are both good choices, the i5 will give a little higher fps for cpu bound games, the i7 may come in handy for some online games that can use more than 4 cores, but mostly not. You could also consider a Xeon, which is like the i7, but without integrated graphics, and usually cheaper.

Thanks for all the replies... I know there are many questions regarding this CPU and I did read them but they didn't fit my personal needs. This is the cheapest route and seems to fit me the best. My current build can run bf4 on ultra, but really struggles in single core games that i love to play. I am having a hard time justifying upgrading but I feel like it will make gaming much more enjoyable, thanks all!!!
