I’ll be as brief as possible:
I have a “Dell xps 8300”, they don’t support this computer for windows 10. I downloaded the free windows 10, then found out Dell doesn’t support this any longer.
My problem is:
I have 12 gig memory,
I-7 2600 CPU
460 Watts power supply
ATI/AMD 5770 HD Graphics card (I suspect this is the problem) dual slot 1 gig memory.
1 tb hard drive (plus external Ultra passport)
Dell 24” HD Monitor
Two printers, dymo label printer
4 usb’s, (2 are 3.0) plus hub for extra usb’s
2.0 Bus for graphics
A06 Bios from Dell
Broadcom for internet

Sometimes my monitor will break up, flicker, go black, and computer freezes. I have to “unplug” my computer to get it to come back on. It will work for a while, then act up again.
The error prompt is “display driver stopped, now is working again”.
I adjusted the TdrDelay in regedit to (8), to try to help this problem, but still acts up.
I download all available drivers for this Graphics card, but AMD won’t support any new drivers for this 5770 hd card, but has created a legacy driver to support it, it doesn’t work.

I wanted to upgrade to a GTX 950 NVIDIA (from zotac), but I got the below response from

From NVIDIA Support:
Before buy the GTX 950 card, please check your motherboard BIOS option.
Search the PCI ROM Priority, Video OPROM or VGA support option.
For these options, the BIOS should be set to UEFI only or UEFI first, before install the GTX 950 card.
If there options are not available, the GTX 950 card may be not applicable.

If you are not gaming, you may choose the standard version GTX 950 card instead of the OC or AMP version.
The graphic card required PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot for installation.
If your board is PCI-E 2.0, the card may be unable to reach the maximum performance.
Also, the card required dual slots for installation.
The power supply required minimum 300W with a 6pins PCI-E power cord.
Please check from your power supply.

I looked at my bios (f12), but didn’t see any options to change the above to UEFI, etc.
Since I have a 2.0 bus, that’s a concern also, please help.
Has anyone else had this problem with the Dell XPS 8300 and drivers?
Thanks for all your help in this matter. (or maybe upgrade to GEforce 750 Ti)

I am running Windows 10 flawlessly, I purchased a MSI Geforce gt 730 4G Video card, which suits my needs, I am not a gamer, the BIOS is legacy but that will not cause any issues, having an Intel Chipset does help, this is a great computer, with pretty decent specs for it's age, I have never been one that believes in the latest and greatest to me that is a load of bull, but this machine will run Windows 10, the only other issues could be any other hardware,
run a Windows 10 readiness test but this system will run 10 I had a Dell Optiplex 760 running Windows 10

I finally purchased from Amazon a Gigabyte geforce 750 TI OC, and my xps 8300 is working great so far. I think all my problems were the ATI/AMD 5770 hd card. The display drivers did not work correctly on my xps 8300. Thanks for your info.

it comes down to the uefi BIOS, Dell and other manufactures want to force people in purchasing new computers, however a recent survey is people are keeping their Desktops and Laptops longer now, this XPS with the I-Core5 hardly breaks a sweat when I have multiple applications open, these high end at the time machines are still good today, but, cheeky DELL is not updating these legacy Bios any more so we have limitations on some of the latest video cards, but the card that I have mentions works for me, and suits my needs , that is the key to any purchase of a machine and hardware needs , but good that you are sorted

I agree, I almost bought a new one thinking because "DELL", isn't updating any bios, drivers, etc for the XPS, I was out of luck. I took a chance and got the 750 TI, and now it is working good. I won't buy from Dell anymore, I will have one made here locally, and make sure all components can be updated and any components are good for Windows 10 - 64. I have an I7 2600 works great until dell stopped updating there drivers. You would think some company out there would have legacy bios updates. I have the A06. No UEFI, video card works great. Thanks for your help.

I have worked a few contracts for Dell as a PC Engineer their XPS and Optiplex line are very good, the 760 I mentioned is still going strong, I might use it as a NAS server since I can upgrade it to 8 gigs of ram, but I am pleased with the XPS 8300 I paid £160 pounds for it, pretty decent kit for the specs, next machine I am not sure this does everything and more,
Many consumers over compute their needs, I recommend these XPS machines, they are still up to the task

Your welcome,
I just purchased a OEM Windows 10 Pro Disc just in case free Windows 10 is ending soon ,
I am going to put 1 Terabyte SSD drive in this and increase the Ram to 16 gigs, it will fly, and I will get another few years out it , then look at the next used machine,
Latter

>>I have a Dell XPS 8300 and though it works with 10, it occasionally hangs and he mouse is jumpy at times.
The similar laptop runs perfectly with 10 and both are identical and came with 7.I have run all hardware diagnostics but hey can be bogus as my hard drive went after it said it was OK.. I also have done a clean install. I was going to install 7 which dell recognizes and upgrade A3 to A11 and drivers etc but am not sure of that move.
I have a new hard drive, RAM is 6 GB, i5, and NVidea GE Force 420; I am not a gamer.
I will now run in safe mode to see about those 3rd party apps. Then I will run with just the on board graphics card. After that I am stuck - any ideas??
Thanks a lot
Peter

I finally got a Nvidia GTX 750 TI OC and it seemed to correct all problems. Dell doesn't support the 8300 so it took me a lot of guess work and finally I got the GTX 750 TI. I have not had a problem with it. It also uses less wattage, I think that was the main culprit in this, it works well with the bios in my condition, but I don't know if it will help you, but for about $100, it's work the chance. Good Luck

>>I am embarrassed to say that after all my diagnosing and attempts to get my 8300 working with Dell, I :( used I Obit's driver updater and this machine never worked so well. I can't get Dell to recognize the machine b/c I had windows 7 when I got it.
I know better, I had an image ready, in case but it worked.

Hi Frustrated947. Thanks for the information in your thread. I find myself in the same predicament, having tried one GPU already. Can you provide the SKU, for the Gigabyte GTX 750Ti GPU that you purchased? is it this one
- Gigabyte Graphics Cards GV-N75TOC-2GL or this
- Gigabyte Graphics Cards GV-N75TWF2OC-4GI

Thanks again.

I have the XPS 8300 and a laptop like it. I took a chance and upgraded the BIOS at Dell although it did not recognize my PC as I have Win 10 in both and they came with 7. The desktop 8300 succeeded but the laptop failed. It was going anyway and ran quite hot. I got a Chromebook to replace the laptop and it's the best move we ever made. 4 GB RAM, 32 GB storage with USB 3 ports and HDMI. It is an Acer 14 and made of aluminum for $288 at BB. Terrific security; no complaints.
I am still using the desktop with the upgraded BIOS and I think it helped with the screen flicker. Have Micro Center build a PC for you but never get one from a manufacturer or retail again. Power Specs - good parts to rely upon. They do not build a laptop.
