Upgrading GPU...Can my CPU & PS handle it?

New forum user here...

Little bit of background on my current rig setup:

  • ASUS GTX-770 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5
    Intel i5-4670k Haswell Quad-Core 3.4 GHz
    Corsair HX series 850W
    ASUS Sabertooth Z87 motherboard
    16 GB RAM
    Standard cooling
So my thought is to upgrade the graphics card so I can run newer games like Tomb Raider, TC Division, Need for Speed as well as GTA5. Instead of going the route of buying a new expensive card, I'd rather do an SLI setup until it's time for another full build.

If I ran another GTX-770 in SLI, would I need to upgrade any other components of my rig?

Apologies if this has already been answered or there's a sticky somewhere that answers questions like these!

Thanks

Solution
No, your setup would not limit a 1080 in any way as the i5 is a very capable CPU. Also, resolution doesn't really affect CPU usage is is almost entirely dependent on the GPU.

I guess I should have been a little more specific about the games. The only ones I currently play are GTA 5 and Witcher 3. The ones I mentioned above are games I plan on getting eventually.

If your 770 had more than 2gb of vram an SLI setup might be viable, but in your care it would be a really bad investment. Games are already pushing past 2gb of vram. Hold on to the card for a coulpe of months until the next generation of cards come out from both NV and AMD and see what's what then.

So another question to follow...seeing the recent release of the GTX 1080, would my current setup (as noted in the first post) limit the potential of a GTX 1080? I would think 1440 gaming would be no problem but would 4k settings give me some issues until I upgraded my CPU/RAM?
