Any reason I shouldn't add an extra 16GB (2x8) to my current 32GB (4x8)?

As the title says, I have 32GB (4x8) but I run after effects and it just isn't enough. Can I simply buy an extra couple of 8GB sticks and pop them in? And does it matter which slots I put them in?

This may be a silly question but I just wanted to check! Thank you

Setup:
Mobo - X99 PRO
CPU - i7 5820k
OS - Windows 10

Nice rig, again no guarantees, it can be done, possibly as simple as installing and Go. Could take timing/voltage adjustments to get them to play, or they may not play at all. If you try and have problems, give a shout and we can try adjustments

Sometimes you can, but sometimes the memory modules don't play nice. I ran in to an issue once where I had a 6GB kit (3x2GB) installed and later purchased the exact same kit a year later to double the amount, and ended up getting memory errors. Long story short, after working with G.Skill on the issue, they told me that small changes in manufacturing process can be enough to cause an issue. I ended up having to purchase a single 12GB kit. It doesn't happen to everyone and we install different RAM amounts in servers all the time (ECC helps here), but you can try with the understanding that it may not work out.

No. That is the thing. X99 has been proven to be quite inconsistent or 'fragile' when it comes to memory configs. As Tradesman1 said it might work it might not. The problem in your situation is that obviously you perform memory heavy tasks. That means that if it works 99 percent of the time as it should, it is going to be the 1% to fuck up your workload/flow. I imagine that you are running long renderings, it could crash the entire thing for a simple memory error.

If you use so much memory i would advise to switch to a xeon and ecc memory when possible.
