I have an existing raid system with two 2tb sshds as primary hard drives (one raid hard drive) and am trying to install a second, storage unit. I have an old 500gb IDE that is working fine but when I plug in my 5tb sata the system seems to only allow the hd to be part of the raid array. It is a fresh install and I dont mind reinstalling. Also I set up the two sshds as raid 0 striped. I attempted to give the second (physically third) its own raid but was not allowed, or windows could not see it. It is an Intel board, from a emachine, I am working with what I have until I can assemble a new system. Any advice or instruction would be greatly appreciated. The old IDE drive is basically junk and isn't currently attached to the system.

First off I strongly recommend AGAINST raid with SATA or IDE drives. The way that bus works, it is not ideal for any sort of RAID as it doing so will significantly shorten the life of the disk. Also recovering from a HD failure in a SATA or IDE raid is often difficult, and certainly not for your typical PC enthusiast.

Raid 0 increases risk as you are now using drives in a configuration which both shortens their life and increases the difficulty once they do die.

I can't understand what it is you were trying to do with the 3rd drive as it makes no sense. You attempted to make the 3rd disk it's own array??? How and why and with what? Are you trying to mirror the raid 0 to create a raid 10 with only 3 disks? Don't you know that this will wipe out any advantage of your raid 0 in speed because if you managed to make this happen it would only run at slowest disk in that config? And you won't be able to easily boot from the 5tb even if you managed to make this work.

RAID, especially SATA and IDE raids are not s substitute for good backups. If you are concerned about being able to recover from a crash. Run single disks, take images from them and then run differential backups on folders with data you care about.

I have a crappy computer, I will eventually upgrade. Most of my data is on my home network or backed up on DVD. The configuration I am attempting is the two 2tb sshds as one primary raid 0 hard drive. The IDE disk just had my movies on it so I want to have my new 5tb HDD to run as a second storage disk, separate from the raid. When I went to the raid setup, because the MB wont see the 5tb, i attempted a new configuration. Apparently if I had the room and two 5tb hdds I could easily make a 10tb hdd, but I only have the third 5tb sata hdd, which I installed in the floppy bay. I'm sorry if I dont know how to ask the question, but essentially I have three sata hds, 2 2tb sshd, and one 5tb hdd. the two 2tb are raid 0 but I cannot get the third hdd to work independently. Is it possible that I can? My goal is the speed of the two sshds and a primary storage on the 5tb.

Im not using a raid controller card, do I have too? I am using the mb sata ports for the hard drives and the dvd, which is working fine, just the third hard drive cannot be seen independently.

You don't have to use a RAID card (although those tend to be faster and have more config options).
With most* motherboards with built in raid there are some SATA ports designated to be part of the RAID and some that are not. Checking this in your motherboard manual should straighten things out for you.

*by most, I mean everyone I have ever paid attention to but I don't use sata raid due to the risks I mentioned previously so I am not the most attentive to this feature. With other types of disk (such as SAS) or even near-line SAS I am far more likely to be using raid.

For my motherboard I found a manual at https://www.scribd.com/doc/183510552/Manual-Ecs-Mcp73vt-Pm (Page 59) So the seperate array I attempted to create was "Spanning" and it allowed me to create the array with one disk but the bios and os did not recognize it upon reboot.

Here is a pic of the setup in the raid screen

There is no option to run the 5tb independent, I even tried the different sata ports. Do you honestly think it is safer and possibly little difference in speed if I only use one sshd for my primary?
