Every manual for the board or online for your board will have a diagram of the recommended memory configurations.
From my experience with the X79 and X99 the sticks need to go in the right slots or it can cause problems (like being stuck in single or dual channel, or just not boot). I suggest reading the manual. Every board is different so its impossible to tell you without knowing which motherboard.
