Hi all,

I have mixed results on my brand new WD Elements 2TB.

When I did full format from command prompt using format /FS:NTFS, it stopped in the middle of progress saying that there's bad sector.

But when I ran Extended Test using Data Lifeguard Diagnostic, the result is Passed.

I tried to Write Zeros using Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and it couldn't finish because there's bad sector.

FYI, I connect this drive to USB 2.0 port because I don't have USB 3.0 port. Is that what causes the problem?

Could the problem be caused by my laptop? I read somewhere that laptop power system can cause problem to USB-powered drive. And I noticed when I ran the format /FS:NTFS, it would stop at different times. The first time it stopped at 5%, then the 2nd time it stopped at 15% progress.

Can anyone please help me to troubleshoot? Should I replace this new drive?

Thanks.

Hey there, omyoji.

Sorry to hear about the problems you are experiencing with your drive. :(
This should have nothing to do with USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports as the USB revisions (versions) are backwards compatible. However, I'd advise you to try the drive with a different computer and a different USB cable. Run both Quick and Extended tests again and try writing zeros as well, to see if the issue reoccurs. If it does, unfortunately that might mean that the drive could be faulty and you should contact our customer support team and ask about RMA.

Let's hope that this is not the case. I'll be sure to check the results from the additional testing once you post them here.

Hi Boogieman_WD,

Thanks, I'll try it with different computer.

Another question, how long does it usually take when writing zeros using USB 3.0? Would it be faster than USB 2.0?

Try a different USB cable as well. As for your other question, basically writing zero is still writing on the drive, which would mean that you should be able to write faster with a USB 3.0. A Full Erase will always take a lot of time (from a couple of hours up to several hours, depending on the drive's size), as this basically writes a zero to every single sector on the HDD. The Quick Erase does that to the first and last 1 000 000 sectors of the drive.
