I bought a brand new pc with hdd--windows 7 preinstalled. Also bought new ssd. I want to put windows 7 on the ssd and make it the primary drive. And make the hdd a secondary drive. I don't want to clone the hdd--just want to reinstall windows on the ssd. How can I do this?

Solution
If you want to do clean install of Windows on the SSD rather than cloning, you'll have to buy a Windows 7 installation DVD with it's own product key & licence. Cloning is the only way to avoid that and is the only way that makes sense since you've already paid for Windows 7 on your new PC.

Hey there & Welcome, allquieton!

You can simply clean install Windows on the SSD by creating a bootable flash drive with the same OS. It should activate automatically once you go online, since the operating system was pre-installed on your computer.
However, make sure you backup all your data from the HDD somewhere off-site and unplug the drive from the SATA ports until the clean install on the SSD is completed. Otherwise, you might encounter an OS confusion by having both storage drives connected to the motherboard. Once you have Windows up and running, plug back the secondary drive and reformat it through Disk Management.

If you need more detailed assistance, I'd advise you check some Windows Install & Optimization Guides for SSDs & HDDs.

Hope this helps you. Good luck! :)
