RAM: Corsair Vengeance 4x4Gb DDR3
GPU: Gainward GTX770 Phantom
PSU: Corsair AX860 Platinum

Tried to install 2nd SSD Samsung 850 1Tb
Also there is 2 HDDs, an Aerocool front panel and a DVD drive in a Zalman Z11 Plus (lots of wiring).

Hi all,

After cleaning and rearranging my case to fit a 2nd SSD, something inside went wrong on startup and an electrical smell came from inside. I either hadn't secured all my wires or static caused a short. It was getting late - lesson learnt...

After checking all connections the system hangs on the Boot Device LED. No beeps.

After removing everything and breadboard testing the motherboard (with CPU and fan plugged in) and PSU the same situation occurs.

There is no visible damage to the motherboard so I hoped it was the PSU (so I could RMA it). The PSU has passed a test with a digital PSU tester - I found it hard to use my multimeter as the PSU wiring is all black.

I have since inspected and reseated the RAM and CPU - no bent pins.

I've moved the jumpers and also had the button battery out for a while - no improvement.

After following the how to guides and reading all similar threads, I'm at a loss what to try next. I can't find any burst capacitors or melted transistors anywhere.

I don't want to buy a secondhand board - what if it is the PSU after all?

I'm not ready to upgrade for a year or so, but I may bite the bullet with a dead board.

With no access to another PSU or motherboard, is there any other ideas? This was my 2nd successful build (the PC has been working perfectly for over 2 years) and I don't overclock so I am very inexperienced.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

I was in a similar situation to yours this winter. Make sure your PC "beep" speaker has good connections. Mine didn't and I ended up buying a new PS and MB before I discovered it. Also, I don't think I will be buying another MB without this feature: A 2-digit LED display on the MB that tells you exactly where in the POST it fails. I have a Gigabyte GA-X99-UD3 now with that feature and I love it.
