Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I have an i7-2700K Z68 chipset processor currently and am looking to upgrade. The main reason is I want to build with a smaller case with a Micro-ATX board as I need to downsize (literally). Was thinking maybe a Corsair Carbide Air 240 or something.

Is it worth buying a new CPU/MB/RAM for the new Mico-ATX case or should I just invest in an old Z68 Micro-ATX MB?

I guess I'm wondering if my processor should be upgraded at this point as it's been about 5 years. Thought I'd ask those that know more than I if I will see a comparable difference in performance.

Lastly, if you do suggest an upgrade, I wouldn't mind any suggestions for a CPU/MB. My budget is flexible enough as I've been saving up for something like this for a while. Thank you very much for your advice!

Solution
The skylake ones run cooler (draw less power) this would be useful in a new smaller enclosure. Overclocking a CPU in a smaller case is going to be challenging to cool.

I did some research and it appears the i7-2700k IS on par with many of the more modern processors, especially when overclocked.

Correct me if I'm wrong then, would I be better off holding off on upgrading or am I missing something? Are these newer processors THAT much better than what I already have? Thanks!
