I've noticed how girls do it and now my friends are starting to do it. I personally don't see the point of steam howing how many hours I game a week. I guess it prevents people on left 4 dead 2 from checking you out.

Honestly, it is the same as going private on Facebook. People will stop seeing certain stats of yours and limit their visibility on stuff you post on your profile. Usually, girls are more paranoid about this kind of stuff, but still.... it is up to you whether you want to have a public or private steam profile.

In addition to the above, another reason that some people go private is because of their inventory. Scammers and/or high-volume traders troll profiles looking for rare stuff and if you have something they want, they will often start bugging you.
