Quick noob question but what type of memory do I need for this board? I know it takes ddr3 but is it 240 or do I need to go with server memory?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello... the bottom ram SAYS "PC2 6400" and with the notch location indicates DDR2 800 CL6 4GB ram stick.
the top ram SAYS "PC3 10600R" and with the notch location indicates DDR3 1333 ECC CL9 4GB ram stick... The "R" indicates ECC and a NON-ECC would be an "U".

If you are talking about the Evga sr-2 then you will need standard desktop ddr3. However don't go above 1600mhz the higher clocks may cause some issues.

Thanks for being prompt!

I ordered some of this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S287MDA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_nmOdxb7RE252C

Should I return it for a 16000 speed? I ordered it without thinking about the fact that this board is different from my last...

Thanks,
Kevin

As ironsounds says it depends on the cpu. However itmay just downclock the ram but it could also very well be that it just doesn't work. I have had no succes running anything higher than 1866 on lga 1366 chips.

Thanks guys,

I am running dual Xeon x5680s

The thing that's throwing me for a loop is that I have some random ddr3 ram here that's 240 pin and it doesn't fit into the slots.

The Hynix ram I have is actually server memory and fits.

So I'm not sure if the 240 pin I just ordered will fit.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks again for the reply!

So reading this the max speed listed in 1333. However I know a couple of people with this board that run 2133. Does this mean their 2133 are running at 1333 or that 1333 is simply either reccomended or the highest listed?

So here are the two 240 ram sticks I have. One has the slot right down the middle and the other is about one third. It looks like the RAM I ordered is about the same as the one that is about one third which is the one that fits but what's the difference in these two RAM sticks? Can they both be 240 pin and have different splits?

The hp one is probably a ECC ddr3 stick the bottom one is ddr2 and that won't fit.

Thanks guys,

That bottom stick is in fact ddr3 according to model number but oh well haha. It's old enough to be ddr2. I'll wait for the RAM to come and test it. I thought I picked the right RAM just got thrown off when the other RAM didn't fit.

Thank you all!

Thanks for the reply. It's hard for me to believe the machine I took that out of is that old! But looking back on it I guess it's been at least 7 years. I was so focused on it being ddr3 haha *duh* :)

Thank you!
