FX8350 + M5A97 R2.0 heat problems - CPU cooler borked? (CPU fan error on boot up)

All right, this is a bit of a strange one. When I got back from work today and booted up my PC it went into an American Megatrends splashscreen saying "CPU fan error - press F1 to continue" or something to that effect. Restarted, same thing. When I pressed F1 it threw me into the normal ASUS bios. I looked around that for a minute and everything seemed as I left it, so I exited again and Windows promptly loaded up. Idle temps fine, cooler plugged into CPU fan, CPU fan running, all good?

Except when I loaded up Dark Souls 3 I discovered my temperatures are going absolutely crazy. My socket temp hit 65 in about 2 minutes, its the first time I've ever seen it go over 60, highest up until now was about 58 and that was with an unoptimized launch version of Fallout 4 in a demanding area. (I know this combo of CPU and Mobo have issues with heat pooling around certain spots and driving up the socket temp quite a bit, but again, I've never seen it this high, and I don't know how close 65c is cutting it to the limit. I turned the game off after 3 minutes because of that. I'm confident that if I would have let it roll it would have continued rising.) Also, my thermal reserve (monitored through AMD Overdrive) went as low as 8c, also the worst I've ever seen it go by quite a big margin. The weird thing is that I spent the entire day yesterday playing DS3 and the temps were fine, nowhere near as bad, even in the swamp area which is apparently building a reputation for being very heavy to run at max.

Again, my idle temps are fine and the CPU cooler (a one of the old Coolermaster V8s) seems to be running just as before as far as I can see, which is why this really confuses me. Are there any tests one of you guys would recommend running? Maybe somewhere I can monitor the RPM of the CPU fan for example? I'm just about fed up of these socket temp issues (50+ is still enough to make me nervous) but don't have the budget to switch to an Intel setup right now.

Solution
Quick update, I replaced my CPU cooler with a 212 evo and all is working fine. Fan being ramped up when CPU is under strain, temps very good, etc. So it looks like the fan in the old V8 was just dying. I might have been able to simply replace the fan for less money but its a bit tricky on the V8 I have so I'm happy. Did some looking around and 700rpm is very low for a CPU cooler, for comparison the non defect fan I have on the cooler now is spinning at 900rpm in idle. My socket temp hasn't gone above 50 and my thermal reserve hasn't gone below 25 while playing the same areas in DS3 I was before.

I'd say the fan went bad. Open your case and see if the CPU Fan is spinning, if it's not, then there's your culprit. Download HWMonitor or Open Hardware Monitor to monitor your temps and fan RPMs. I honestly prefer Open Hardware Monitor.

The CPU fan is spinning. HWmonitor tells me its at 700rpm, I don't know how high or low that is and if its supposed to be faster.

Considering just using any spare money I have next month to switch to an i5 setup.

Ok first of all, sorry for the late response. 700RPM is on the low side, I'd say try replacing the thermal paste, if it doesn't work then try another cooler. If THAT doesn't work then I would think it's a bad temperature sensor, but that's very unlikely.
