Solution
Welcome to the community, Joyce!

I'm sorry to hear about your connectivity issues with the WD My Passport Ultra. :( I'd suggest you try using a different USB cable and even attempt to plug it to a different USB port on your computer. Can you hear the external HDD power up when you connect it, though?
I'd also suggest you check your Device Manager and make sure your USB Hub Controller drivers are up to date. You should consider manual install from the motherboard/computer manufacturer's website.

I'd also strongly recommend you go to Disk Management and check if the external is recognized there. If the drive is brand new, you'd need to Intialize it and then Partition & Format it.

Keep me posted...

I've got the same problem but on an older internal WD hd. Power fluctuations burned out my WD hd PCB board. I've found that WD does not store the firmware on the PCB board, unlike most, but on the hard drive in an area called the Service Area(SA). So if the board burns out and most services will try to swap the Firmware from an new identical PCB from the old PCB to the new PCB then the transfer will not work. The WD hd will begin to spin but will not read the drive.

I have no solution but a similar problem from my post today:
Western Digital HD Service Area Firmware Transfer

Hello, I am looking for a Service which will transfer

my Firmware from the Service Area on my HD
WD3200JB-00KFA0. I have read a couple of threads and
it appears that most do not know that if the PCB
board burns that you cannot simply transfer the
Firmware on a WD to another board. The link is below:
http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/western_digital/WD...
I have tried to have the hd fixed with "Outsource
Data Recovery" which is a total waste of time and
money, whom I feel like reporting to the BBB. Next I
went to PCB Solutions who appear only to deal with
PCB board Firmware Transfers who have truly tried to
help but SA(service area) transfers are beyond their
scope. I hoping I won't have to eventually pay an
exorbitant recovery cost. I've bought a R-Driver USB
SATA IDE Cable to access the drive via USB. It clicks
a couple of times and unless I use the Sentinal,
UVCView.x86.exe, or RecoverMyFiles-Setup from Recover
My Files, the internal USB drive plugged in
externally will not show up. The HD shows identifies
in System as "WDC ROM MODEL-BUCCANER- USB Device" similar to the previous link from "datacent.com"
defines. I captured four screen images of the System
drives but how to attach them to this message is
beyond me. This is just a Firmware Transfer but not
from the PCB board but from the HD on a WD so the
Service which does this should be someplace.
WD customer service has said their is no help for
this flaw other than recovery services endorsed by
them and their HD has been not something which I will
be another customer. I stumbled on a blog of how
recovery services are nothing more than bilking the
corporate customer and if you happen to be a PC user

like me forget it.

@Joyce, I'd not recommend doing anything that extreme with your WD My Passport external drive.
Such procedures void the warranty on the WD Product and requires special HDD knowledge and dust-free clean environment to tamper with any mechanical hard drives physically.

Moreover, your external drive incorporates a hardware encryption, which won't allow you to access the data on the drive if you get it out of its original enclosure. So be careful.

I believe that the basic troubleshooting steps from my previous post will help you resolve the issue. If they don't help you, then you should definitely get in touch with our Customer Support and let them know about it. You should be able to send RMA request and get a replacement, if your WD external is still covered by the warranty.

Keep us posted, though! :)
