Hi,

I am looking for an HDD for my workstation. I've got a 120GB SSD as my OS drive and I'm running my programs from it.

I'm going to write output data files to this new HDD and the system is on 7/24.

Which color should I go?

Thanks in advance.

If it has to be a WD then get a RED. They're meant for NAS devices so 24/7 operation. Blue and Black are meant for desktop use and not specifically...

Thank you for quick reply. But, you prefer black only because of its performance? Black costs more than blue. And as I know blue HDDs are not bad performance-wise.

The black is the fastest, while the red is meant to be run 24/7 and will be quieter. I would choose the red.

Thank you for your reply. The red is for 7/24 use, it is OK, but, is there a noticeable difference between the performance of the red and black or blue?

It depends what you're using them for. Some will argue on this, but i would say it is marginal when used as second drives with an ssd. Running an os or a database on them is a different story. I always go for endurance and quietness.

Is the drive actually going to be accessed 24/7 or is the computer simply on 24/7. If it's just on 24/7 a blue drive is perfectly fine. If its being accessed 24/7 or you simply want maximum life span out of the drive you really should just get HGST Deckstar instead, they have a much lower failure rate than any of the WDs. https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-q4-2015/

The blues are great price-wise and are good performance-wise, but, I doubt about their survival under 7/24 usage.

kind of both of them. It is on 7/24 and I've got programs with different run times from about an hour to a whole week.
Update: And this kind of usage is going to be last for about 1 year.

My recommendation for the red stands.

OK and thank you for comments.

If it has to be a WD then get a RED. They're meant for NAS devices so 24/7 operation. Blue and Black are meant for desktop use and not specifically marketed for constant usage.

Though I'd still recommend a HGST for this kind of usage, they solidly beat the REDs.
