R9 290 Vapor x overheating????

I was playing the witcher 3 today at about ultra settings and hair works turned off when I noticed that the Saphire logo led turned red and I imediatley turned off the game. Is that a bad thing? I heard it only turns red when it is overheating and is about to fry itself. Since then I changed the fan speed from 20% to 45% and it seems to keep the card under 70c so far. Any ideas what makes that have caused it?

Um, why do you have your fans set to one single speed? Putting it on auto is best, or setting a fan curve. Obviously if fans are always at 20% let alone 45% the card will overheat.

You really should set the fans on the card to auto.

The card was already on auto when it started to overheat. I had to uncheck auto to set it to 45%. I thought since it was showing 20% on the graph (Msi afterburner) I should bump it up to 45%.

If it was on auto and overheating (It shouldnt) you should set up a fan curve.
Something like 50% at 60C, 65 at 70C and 80 at 80C.

How would I go about doing that? And if it shouldn't get to the red point and it did what does that mean? And What if it only happened once? I have been playing witcher 3 for like 10 hours so far and it has never happened before.

Use MSI afterburner, in the settings there is an option for a user defined fan curve.
It means it got close to overheating, but obviously it didnt because your card didnt downclock to save itself (meaning it didnt actually overheat).
Its nothing to worry about.

Ok thanks for the help. 1 more thing though. The reason why it orobobsly didn't overheat was because I turned it off imediatley. If I would have not noticed it and left it on would it have overheated and possible damaged it?
Its nothing to worry about.

Probably not, the card known to shut down/throttle before damage can occur.
