Hi there, I'm looking to buy a system for more on the cheaper end ... I do not game at all, but I will be running a few VM's (security onion, Kali etc) most likely no more than 4 at a time. Do you think 8GB of RAM is enough? or should I go with 16 to be safe? Also, I'm torn between CPU's but I'd rather not spend the money on an i7 if it is not necessary, I know the i5's don't support hyper threading, but are the Amd's really that bad... What about the Xeon? I've been reading up on this for weeks now and can't seem to get a specific/accurate answer. Thanks in advance!!

Unless you're talking about VMs with 512mb of ram or less, you will need more than 8gb! Unless you know your exact use I would recommend 16GB minimum.

The i5 6400 and 6500 are enough if your VMs are light, but xeon + proper workstation motherboard (not consumer ones like the h170) will let you use directio with some hypervisor/host combinations.
