Hello,
I just purchased a new graphics card today MSI GTX 970 4GB (Upgraded from a GTX 670) and installed it, but could not get any signal on either hdmi or dvi. After some research I saw that a potential fix could have been to update my motherboard bios (P9X79) since I had the original old drivers for it and it could have compatibility issues with my new card.

After downloading the latest bios update (Windows 10 -64bit, version 4701), I renamed the file to P9X79.ROM myself and copied it onto my newly formatted fat32 4gb usb. Until this point my pc was still able to boot up, just had no display because of new card. I then inserted the usb into the proper white bios port while the pc was off, pressed the button for 3 seconds. The light went on and started flashing for about 3 minutes then stopped. Everything looked like it went well. I then removed the usb and tried turning on my machine, but all I got was a boot loop. Power is sent to everything, lights turn on, fans start spinning (for about half a second) and it all dies. After 2 seconds it keeps repeating this (on /off).

Things I have tried after this:
I put my old graphics card back in.
Tried removing cmos battery for about 7 minutes.

Thinking that the update got corrupted somehow, I decided to put the original version of the bios in the usb. (Gotten from the original dvd I have, the naming was the same). And tried to downgrade back. Things looked successful again. Light flashed for 3 minutes then stopped.
But this did not change anything and the pc still wouldn't boot up. (Boot loop)

I called Asus and they told me to try the next steps:

I removed all components from the motherboard except 1 ram, and also removed the motherboard from the case (I saw it could have been a ground issue). But that did not fix the problem.I also noticed this time that the RED CPU_LED light was turning on when it was trying to boot but could have been there since the start.

I have since put my motherboard back in and don't have any ideas what the problem is. I am pretty sure the flash caused the problem, but no idea how to recover from it.

Thanks.

I guess Asus should have made the BIOS thing more noticeable. Maybe renaming the BIOS and flashing that caused whatever system they use to break.

If you scroll down in the BIOS listings there is a utility you must use before updating the BIOS. Some type of converter so it will work with .CAP files. It likely just wrote a bunch of garbage on the BIOS chip and overwrote the program that updates it.

Just a guess though. You could try to download a fresh copy of the old BIOS and see if that works. Guessing it won't but if it does, it will be cheaper than buying a new motherboard.

I did look for the converter, but its not there at all. You can try searching it, but I'm pretty sure its not there. And i did not bother downloading a fresh copy since I had the dvd one, but I can give it a shot now.

Oh wow....found it, such a bad place to put that download honestly. Im giving it a shot now.

Edit: I just ran the converter on my motherboard. (Usb flash 3minutes of blinking light then stopped). Tried booting but didn't work. Now I'm not sure if I need to reinstall the latest driver. I downloaded it and did not change the .CAP extension this time (since the converter would now work with it). But when i plugged it in and pressed the button a solid light appeared, which means it failed. I am not sure what to rename my file to, if thats what is causing the problem or something else.

i am not sure as my board don't have the flashback thing.

I read the converter manual and the one that says how to convert for your board and it doesn't make sense to me. One says to install the program and use it to convert the CAP bios to ROM by putting it in the same folder and running the converter. The other says to put the converter BIOS on the USB and flash it and it will reboot twice.

The only thing I can find about failing is that it says to take it to your local asus service center.

Yeah, asus guides are really confusing, the nearest service center is about 6hr drive away, so I won't be doing that. Based on some other posts, I just bought a new bios chip from ebay and hopefully that will be enough. If that doesn't work then I have no other options.
