Full specs of current machine:

AMD A8-7600 3.8 Ghz Quad Core
Asus A88XM-A Motherboard
Crucial 32 Gb DDR3 1600Hz RAM
Crucial 250 Gb SSD
PNY Nvidia GTX 650 2 Gb
Xbox 360 Controller
In Win C Series Case
Thermaltake 600W PSU
Windows 10 home

Razer DeathStalker Chroma keyboard

VIZIO E Series 32 inch HD LED Smart TV @ 120 Hz 1920 x 1080

I am wanting to upgrade the GPU to a 4Gb Gigabyte GTX 960 G1, and an
EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GS 80+ GOLD, 650W.

I need to know know if my machine will run it well enough to justify the cost over a GTX 950 FTW. Everything is brand new, fresh build, so i won't be changing the mobo or CPU.
I am also looking at the EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB FTW GAMING ACX 2.0+ .....i just like the Gigabyte because of the big blue WINDFORCE logo that lights up on the side, lol.

Solution
950/960 is fine they will have similar performance and no need for 4gb if you want to save money, settings that put you over 2gb on the 960 even the 4gb model will be at low fps which means you're turning something down and than the vram usage goes down also.

I figured i would go with the 4Gb because it's only a $17 price difference over the 2Gb. I have around 103 games on Steam but only play a few, like GTA V, Subnautica, The Forest, 7 Days to Die, SALT, Far Cry 3, Spintires, I also play a lot of Minecraft. Open world / survival / crafting games are my favorites.

For the difference that's fine for sure, you'll see what I'm saying about going over 2gb though, my 3gb 780ti has very high settings in most games and is usually at around 2.5gb usage, settings that would chock a slower GPU. I monitor all types of usage when I game as that is part of the fun for me. Your CPU will cause you to lower some settings also which also lowers real time vram usage.

i would 100% go for the 4gb version it provides a better fps on games that are open world like gta 5 or farcry 3 and you said minecraft so.....YES GET A 960 AND NEVER LAG AGAIN!! yeah yeah yeah i know a 960 is as people say overkill for minecraft but not with shaders ;) but then im not sure if your cpu will bottleneck your 960 in games that are dependant on the cpu

Thank you for the replies, i am going to go ahead and get the 4Gb because just being able to tell my friends i have it is worth the $17 price difference, lol. But i decided my next upgrade is going to be the AMD A10 7890K Black Edition, 4.1Ghz base - 4.3Ghz boost. It's about the best i can run with my mobo, but i think it will let my games breathe a little better compared to my A8 7600.
I wish i could buy them both together but i have a budget of $325.

It would help my budget if my current PSU would run the 960, but the 6 pin section of the 6+2 is broken, it's now a 4+2 ....it was an "open box" from Best Buy, pretty sure it was more of a return. So i am stuck buying a new PSU....unless i can cut the end off my old one and replace it, that would save me $100.

I forgot to mention the free Steam copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider with the 4 Gb..i noticed i don't get it with the 2 Gb, so there's some incentive to get the 4 Gb version.

Before the thread is closed if 350 is the limit on the upgrade Im pretty sure we could offer better options than that.

Dont bother with the high end apu if you are going to get a dedicated graphicvs ard otherwise you are wasting money on an intergrated chip you dont want or need.

The Athlon x4 860 BE and and a 4GB gtx 960.. ( irecommend the Gigabyte windforce 2) will run you about 275 USD.

There is a 870BE but the extra 100Mhz in stock speed isn't going to be worth the extra 15 dollars it costs.

Here are the items I was referring to.

AMD Athlon X4 860K Kaveri Quad-Core 3.7 GHz Socket FM2+ 95W

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 960 4GB WINDFORCE 2X OC EDITION
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125802

The Base clock on this model is 1216, among the highest availble and very near the lowest price for the 4GB models of the gtx 960

Yes I agree with the post above, but ill assume you want Nvidia so that 4GB 960 is the best card in your price range.

As for the cpu upgrade, as mentioned it's not that bad of a cpu but you would gain an extra 600Mhz and the ability to overclock providing you are willing to spend 20 dollars on a cooler like this one, in the end im not sure it's worth it but with a little effort you could gain 1Ghz over your current cpu and when paired with the 960 or 380x you will see substantial gains.. over your current cpu paired with a 960 that is.

Here is an oldie but a good performer for the price 18.99

ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2, CPU Cooler - Intel & AMD, Multi-Directional Mount, 92mm PWM Fan

Tomorrow I am going to go ahead and order the EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB FTW GAMING ACX 2.0+ and the EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 80+ GOLD, 750W Fully Modular for now, then order the AMD Athlon X4 860K Black Edition when i can.
As for the cooler i am already running one similar to that, but it's a dual fan setup by DeepCool .... http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51n9Wk%2B-fHL.jpg, it works good but it's temporary until i can get my Corsair Hydro Series H110i GTX and NZXT S340 Mid Tower Razer Edition case.

After that i will move on to the motherboard and faster memory, this one is good for now. Once all that is done i can finally move on to the cosmetic stuff like the Thermaltake LED ring fans, and Thermaltake COMMANDER F6 RGB. Today i removed the HDD cage to make room for the new 960, and i removed the optical drives and replaced the drive blanks, i need to keep the card reader in for now because i take a lot of pictures, i will get an external when i get the new case. I also mounted my SSD to the back of the case with velcro for now so i can move it when the 960 comes...not sure where it will end up yet.

Actually since i plan on upgrading the motherboard i may wait on the APU so i can move beyond the A series.

Mine has broken connectors on it, and a huge bundle of wires i can't hide. I got it as an open box from Best Buy, i think it was more like a return. And now every so often it has a vibration / buzzing noise. So i am throwing it in the trash. I want a fully modular psu so i only have to use the wire sets i need and not bundle them all together with zip ties. And it will be nice to have once i am running the new graphics card, update to a large processor and mobo, and have a bunch of LED fans and the Corsair Hydro water cooler, i know that PSU will handle anything i decide to throw at it...plus the 10 year warranty, what's not to like.
That PSU will be pretty much future proof in my machine, and probably outlast it too. I am excited to be getting a good one, i have always owned bronze editions, and i am on my 3rd one.
