System probably POSTing but screen stays black with Asus Strix 980 Ti OC and Asus Z170 Pro Gaming [Solved]

Hi

I just put together my all new system, following specs:

Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
Corsair RM650i
Intel i5 6600K (3.5GHz, LGA 1151)
HyperX Fury 8GB DDR4-2133 x2
ASUS GTX 980 Ti STRIX GAMING DC3OC

If I take out the GPU and hook up the screen to the on-board VGA I can see the post and enter the BIOS, I don't have an OS installed, yet.

If I put the GPU back in, however, and connect the screen to the GPU DisplayPort as well, both ports stay silent, the screen stays black. The PC starts glowing and humming, just like when the GPU is out.

I did all the troubleshooting steps I'm aware of and the fact that I can enter the BIOS probably means everything else is working.

The GPU has 2 8-pin power input ports. The PSU came with a cable that goes from 8-pin to 2 6-pin-plus-2-pin plugs - so 2x8-pin in total -, which I put into the GPU. I guess that's correct?

Any advice?

UPDATE:

For those encountering the same problem and seeking a quick answer: My GPU was faulty, got it replaced, now it works.

The CPU_LED will light up for a short moment, then the DRAM_LED will light up but go out as well after a few moments. Then the VGA_LED will light up and stay on. The BOOT_DEV will stay out, if I remember correctly. Currently not at home, so I can't say for sure. Very sure about the first 3 though.

Then the motherboard has some problems with the graphic card.
Did you make sure you plug in both the 8 pins on the GTX 980Ti?
Check your power connectors if they are plugged inn securely.

Pretty sure yeah. There are LEDs above the power inlets, when I don't plug in the cables at all and try to power up, they will light up red. If I plug them in, the LEDs will light up white, presumably indicating that they have power.

I found this: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2885388/asus-z170-pro-gaming-gpu-working.html
Could this have something to do with my case?

Not really. You should be getting a display from your GTX 980Ti to the BIOS since you don't have an OS installed. Whether you have the OS installed or not should not matter. You can try to set the primary display to Pcie in the BIOS but the bios should be able to automatically detect your GTX 980ti.

Okay, i suspected that much. Now, I checked again, and actually all of them light up at one point, but they all go out again, except for the VGA_LED if the GPU is mounted. I tried different video cables, tried most of the GPU outlets but nothing works.

Already did that, updated the bios, reset the cmos, messed around with fast and secure boot options... I'm out of ideas. I'll probably claim DOA and get a new one.

How do I know it's the gpu and not, say, the psu or motherboard?

It's unlikely the psu. It could be the motherboard. Unless you have another graphic card to test, you won't know for sure.

Yes a decent 650W is plenty enough for an over-clocked 6500k+ GTX 980Ti build. The RM 650i is decent enough.

Turns out, the GPU was indeed faulty. Got it replaced and now it works.
