If you really bought a hdmi to vga cable then what did you think would happen??? It literally says HDMI TO VGA, not vga to hdmi. You need a vga to hdmi adapter, or better yet, a newer computer made in the last 10 years! If you have a DVI connector, use a DVI to HDMI instead.

One option is to buy an inexpensive discrete graphics card with hdmi output.

Yeah, you need an adapter that converts the VGA signal to HDMI. Something like this:

Note that you'll need a separate connection from your PC to the TV for sound, as VGA doesn't handle that.

like said you need a active converter
hdmi = digital only
vga = analog only
dvi can do digital , analog and sound as long as its a DVI ''I'' -- DVI ''D'' digital /sound only due its missing the 4 pins around the flat bar pin that used to carry the analog signal
so a dvi-I to hdmi should do all with driver support for sound
