Hi, Starting from today 14/04 my CPU's Temp is jumping very oddly... its like this: the idle temp is 35-42 C but today it went up to 55-62 C without reason i tried opening a game and it reached over 70 C so i quickly closed... then after some time it went back to its idle 35-42 at first i tried SpeedFan to speed up the CPU Fan maybe it could help, no luck, tried tweaking Asus' Q-Fan control, absolutely NOTHING changed... then i gave up for a time and suddenly out of completely nowhere it went back to 37-41 C.. my CPU never acted like this before, both Speccy and HWMonitor shows this temporary jumps... i searched about it online afterwards and people had problem with Windows Defender running scheduled scans in the background, so i disabled mine (i use Eset) nothing changed.. does anyone knows what could possibly be happening?

i have a "Intel Core i7 4770K @ 3.50GHz Haswell 22nm Technology"

Ps: i was experiencing it while i was writhing this thread... now its back to normal... again...

Solution

From what i gather this is actually the norm on some 4790k's. Check the link i provided.
As for the solvable part, well, to put your mind at ease, you could just get a noctua NH-D15 and then there's no way in hell that cpu is getting over 65C :)

If you are on the stock cooler, everything is fine. Try running prime95 and check how high it goes. if it's no more than 70, you're fine. in prime check the box with "maximim heat. Also, while doing this monitor the fans speed in speedfan.

No, i'm not on a stock cooler, i have "Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO"

Even so. 70 is ok, but as a max. Test with prime and see how far it goes. If over 75 and into high 70s, than you should start wondering what's what, as anything over 80 is considered unacceptable on intel.

I'm on the EVO with a 3770k that runs cooler than your cpu and in full prime 95 i get about 71-72-ish, so..

Sorry the delay i had to test it twice. The first test i did was with the CPU's temp normal and that way it got between 66-71. The second test i did while the weird "Jumping" was happening and it reached 74-79. I had to wait cuz the "Jumping" takes some time to appear, like hours... anyway i'm still worried about it cuz out of nowhere this "Jumping" started to happen, before i never experienced such a thing and because the Jumping increases 10~20 C i cannot game while it's happening as it takes the CPU way too near 80...

I dug around a little bit and it seems this happens with that chip. Agreed, it's weird behaviour. Here's a resource.
Regardless, you should game without any worries. Near 80 is no problem whatsoever. Near 100 is where it gets grey, as the chip is rated 105 max and starts to slow down at 100(modern chips will not fry, as they automatically slow down when reaching some factory predefined temps, at witch point you would notice a severe slowdown in any game).
Basically, while it sounds dangerous, if you never ever get past 90, you shouldn't sweat it.

are you sure? i'm not doubting you i'm just still kind of worried, when i started having this temp issue i searched and found this website: http://www.buildcomputers.net/cpu-temperature.html

and as you can clearly see, my CPU's highest safe temp is 67 C recommended by Intel.. so i based myself around that and looked after to see that it would never go beyond that, so this Jumping stuff that suddenly appeared (nearly 2 years with this PC and never ever this happened) caught me off guard...

You could always reset the heatsink and reapply the thermal paste. A Stock i7 4770k hitting 80c on a 212 evo does seem a little high to me. I have a 4790k at stock that hits 72C after hours of Intel burn test. My ambient temps are 73-75F

@JohnnyBoy05

I don't think that will make any different cuz i have applied thermal paste on my components weeks ago, MX-4, suggested by a good fella from Tom's Hardware... btw i also noticed that this "jumping" usually lasts less than a hour (sometimes a tiny bit more)... but after hours it comes back again... it is noticeable when it's about to go away cuz the Temp keeps going to the house of 40s a lot, that's when i know it's going away, and soon enough it goes to its normal idle temp in the 30s' house, otherwise it stays between 50-60 C

That site is innacurate. check here for "Tcase". It's 72.72°C. But, that is the temperature of the heatspreader on the cpu. The cores themselves will get hotter, and that's what you are reading. In order to measure tcase you would need a laser thermometer or something and actually measure the physical case of the cpu.

So yeah, while your temps are strange, so long as you never ever go over 90, you shouldn't worry. Game on!( btw a game will never heat your cpu like prime95 does)

@Hlsgsz

I understand... that makes sense... i'll try to tone down my paranoia about it...

but back to the "while your temps are strange" so its certain that this jumping is a behavior of the chip and not something else? with something else i mean something harmful/solvable

Hm... i see... interesting, thanks man!

For now i'll let things the way it is, for at least a week or two, then i'll consider getting one of those you mentioned

once again, thanks!
