Hi, all. First off, I made a similar post on whirlpool.com, but unfortunately the post gathered very little attention. I realize that there are quite a few threads concerning a similar problem, however I think I've looked through most of them, and have not been able to solve my issue yet.

A computer that I've been building for a while now gets no video display on my reasonably old monitor. The monitor relies on VGA, so I bought a DVI-D to VGA adapter from eBay, however, I am reasonably sure that the adapter nor incompatibility with the monitor is what's causing the issue, as I connected the GPU to my television via a spare HDMI cable, and got the same result. In case you might need it, here's exactly what's in my build:

-Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
-GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970
-CPU: AMD FX 6300, 6-CORE BLACK EDITION, 3.50GHz (default cooling unit)
-Disk drive: LG GH24NSC0/D1
-RAM: 2 x 4GB DDR3-1600 RipjawsX
-Wireless card: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 N900
-PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 ATX12V/EPS12V – 750W 80 Plus Gold
-Storage (primary): Kingston, 120GB SATA3 SSD
-Storage (secondary): Western Digital, Sata3 1TB 7,200rpm HDD

-All other peripherals/accessories, such as the monitor, keyboard, mouse, I am reusing from my other PC.

It is worth mentioning that the GPU I received in the mail appeared to have been damaged, as some of the heat sink fins are bent. I plugged in the system warning speaker, but get nothing upon entering, what I assume is, the boot cycle. Also, The fans on the GPU do spin, which means that it is getting power from the PSU.

One more thing, the HDD status light located on the front panel of my case does not light up when booted, which leads me to believe the system hasn't done anything other than enter the BIOS menu (I pre-installed a copy of Windows 7 on the SSD). If I think of anything I should add to this, I will do so, and if anyone expresses interest in trying to help me solve this, I'll upload images of my build to create a clearer image.

If you could offer any advice on this matter, I'd be very grateful.

Yeah I'd try returning the GPU now, it could be you have a faulty GPU, and unfortunately you don't have any onboard graphics to test it out with otherwise. Unless you have another GPU you can borrow that is. If you do, and that one works but yours...
1. Preinstalling the OS on the SSD was a bad idea becuase windows does some hardware specific configurations when you install it that will be missing when you put it into your system.

2. Are you sure you connected the power cables for the GPU and the Motherboard as well as the EXTRA motherboard 4pin cable, not just the big 20pin one?

3. Did you connect the HDD light plug from the front panel to the motherboard?

Hi, James.
1: I can't at all see where my PC is taking me after being switched on, so I don't see the preinstalled Windows copy being an immediate issue
2: Are you referring to the EPU slot? Mine is an 8-pin slot, but I've experimented inserting both the 4-pin and 8-pin, but that doesn't seem to help.
3: I did plug the status indicator into the motherboard

The person who responded to my Whirlpool.com post said that I needed a later "BIOS rev" to run my processor. I asked a follow up question, but got no response. This ASUS motherboard has a BIOS flashback button, which gives me the ability to update the BIOS without needing a monitor. ASUS' website offers a driver for the FX 6300 processor, but I'm uncertain if I should go through with the update, at the risk of bricking the BIOS.

So yes it is POSSIBLE you need to update your BIOS.

Here's the manual page that explains how to do it: http://www.manualslib.com/manual/414970/Asus-M5a97-R2-0.html?page=54
You shouldn't need to do step 1 or 3, as that's just to acquire the BIOS, you'll be downloading it manually from the website, but you do have to rename it.

Note you'll need a working computer to get the USB drive setup.

Alright, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the links. I'll get back to you once it's done.

I did the BIOS flashback operation with two different .cap files; the first one being the latest BIOS update offered by ASUS, but when that didn't work, I tried it again but with a BIOS update specifically for the AMD FX 6300. Same result; black screen. The flashback went fine, according to the status indicator. Do you have any more suggestions? I mentioned earlier that the GPU appeared to have been damaged during transit, do you think I should return it and get a replacement?

Unless you have another GPU you can borrow that is. If you do, and that one works but yours doesn't it's just further proof that the GPU was the problem.
